Nikon Users - Please Suggest Lenses

Honestly, the fish tank shots are the only things I'm not happy with using the kit lens for.

My kit lens is the 18-55.

How do you feel about the range of the Kit lens Are you Ok with a better lens with the same range coverage but with better image quality?
Try shooting few times at fixed 50 mm to decide if a fixed 50 mm prime can work for you if yes then the 50mm Nikon (1.8 or better yet 1.4) will not disappoint you.
If you can't live with a fixed 50 mm then why not try to rent some lenses before commiting to buy one. for a 300 USD lense rental for a day would not be expensive (if rental is common around you)
What is your main complaint with the kit lense? is it blurred shots due to lack of aoerture speed or is it sahrpness?
I doubt the sharpness of the kit lense is that bad.so maybe your problem can be solved by just getting an external flash which can be used for fish shots to allow faster apertures and smaller aperture for motion freezed shots and more DOF?
Honestly I rarely get decent shots for moving fish without a Flash.
I can get very fast shutter speed at 1.4 with the 50 mm or at 2.8 with the Tamron but still Dof is very thin and nailing the focus is imperative.
Try to post some of your pictures so that we can tell what the real problem is before rushing into buying a new lense.

This was with the d40 and the 18-55 lense. While not the greatest, the first one I came to that was in photobucket. You need to post some pics. Manual focus is a must. Sometimes auto will pick up a speck or a reflection on the glass.

i really like my 60mm af-s lens. I think for general photography and close up it works well. here is a photo

I too am new. You should just read what you can and play with different settings. You will be surprised what you can learn. shooting on auto is a waste of your dslr. good luck.

Just hovering over it. The clam was about 20 to 24 inches long. The tangs were about 3 to 4 inches. It was from a LFS.

I'm currently debating on whether to go with the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 or the Tamron 90mm f/2.8. Both are about the same price at B&H right now. I'm leaning towards the Tamron.

Jar*Head,
How do you like the new D90?
In May I JUST got the D80 and I really like it.

I may have to ask for the D90 for Christmas!

Sandy, i love the D90. It keep me busy learning all the stuff that come with it. My wife bought the D40 kits in Sept and the D90 in November for my birthday. I will post my D40 kit up for sale soon :D.

You should check out the 105mm f2.8 Ais Micro lens. It is manual but work very well for half of the price :D
