Richard,
Thanks. My LFS doesn't have clam so I wondered where you got yours. I would actually stick to the stuff you are using. I would guess that frozen food for the reefing hobby has stricter controls than that sold for human consumption...

Pat,
I don't remember the name off hand but I will check around to see if I wrote it anywhere. I got it at Staples.
Your choices are actually quite limited - nowadays most desklamps are fluorescent or LED and made of platic that couldn't handle the heat of a halide.
The lamp you are looking for is built for a double ended halogen bulb so it is metal and the right dimensions. They might sell it as a 'drafting light' or something like that.
Another thing that I wanted to do was find a smaller mogul-socket halide and wire it into one of the old school swing arm desk lamps - like the 'Pixar lamp'. That would have been even more camoflaged than this one, but everything fell into place when I was trying to make it work so I ended up going with my current configuration. HTH.

Pat,
I wouldn't expect that super market clams would 'thrive' in a reef tank... thet are a cold water animal aren't they??

you can buy the same clams at lfs for 5 bucks a piece. I have had them a year now only one has died and it was within the first week

Hey Chad, How do you water changes and how often do you do them? Did you change the impeller in the eheim 2128 back to the original one that came with it when you went from your 2 gal to your 7 gal? Last question what size holes were drilled for the return and drain? Thanks Bobby

Nice!

Nice!

First time reading this thread. Quickly chugged through the pages. One question: where do you get those tanks??

thanks

Bobby,

I take a bucket of salt water (about 4gals) into work at the start of every week. I start a syphon and fill up a second bucket until it's at the same level as the first. Then I pour in the new water and dump the old stuff down the toilet.
Good call on the impellor... I did go back to the original when I went to the larger tank. Even though I could always use a little extra oomph, I'm still getting decent 30+ turnover.
The bulkheads are both 3/4".
Thanks for the interest!

Jamie,
Awesome, I'm glad there are still people discovering the thread. Welcome.
Nanoman's right, just about any LFS will build a tank to whatever specifications you want - or rather order the tank from another place that makes them.
I went straight to the glass shop that builds them and gave them my plans.

Nanoman,
I just added the next crop of snails to the tank along with some really nice gracilaria macro (for decoration). I will snap a couple pics tomorrow.

Cheers,

- Chad

Awesome, awesome tank & video. What do you do when its time for vacation? Seems like you cant stay away for too long, whats the longest you have let the tank run, without doing anything. Again I love this tank because it is so original. Between your comp. logged onto RC and that tank on your desk, you must get like 30min of work done, and zone out the rest. Like Office Space.

Haha. Thanks for the compliment!
The longest I have been away from the tank is over five days so far (and all I had to do was clean teh glass off. If I really wanted to push it, I could sit the auto topoff on a 5gal pail and put a fresh batch of snails in the tank. I bet that I could lock the door and not come back for a month and I still wouldn't lose any of the coral - and Ike could probably survive several months of such abuse. That is just a guess though... I plan to baby the system just like I always have. :)
