smmscott,
Thanks! I am really enjoying having it back home so that company can see it when they come over.

Since you and Vince were wondering, the tank move actually went pretty easy. I took two 5gal pails to work with me. I shut off all of the equipment and disconnected the cannister filter (it has built in ball valve shutoffs). I put the filter hoses into a pail and then opened the shutoff to drain the tank, dividing the water between the two pails. I then placed the rockwork and corals in one of the buckets and the mantis shrimp in a small cooler I brought. It took a couple trips to get everything in the car but when I got home I just reversed the steps and had it all set up again in about 5mins (I had a few gallons of new water waiting so I incorporated a water change as well).
Cheers,

- Chad

A couple photos, sorry about the blurry one:

I saw a really nice tank with a small ammount of coarline covered crushed shell mixed in with black sand. It was hard to tell where the rock started touching the sand bed, looked really cool -

Saddleback,

Thanks bro. Actually I looked into it but wasn;t sure if it was worth the cost of the patent and legal fees. I ended up speaking with an Eheim engineer in Germany. I explained to him that an illuminated cannister filter would bring a lot of salt-water aquarists back to using cannister filters because it would allow for a place to grow macro and hold extra live rock, but wouldn't require a noisy/risky overflow. I told him that this design is absolutely perfect for running a nano reef and it would even appeal to the guy with the 200gal tank - just build the cannister body out of clear acrylic or have a window that you could see in. That would allow you to take the media baskets out if you want and make a little bio-ecosystem (like some substrate, lr, decorative macro, sponges, maybe an interesting cleanup crew). With transparant sides, it would be like having a little nano tank that you could plug right into your 200gal reef, I bet that you would spend more time looking at the cannister inside your stand than you would looking at the main display. Anyways, the guy was very interested in the idea and it sounded like they were considering giving me something for it but the Canadian headquarters took over communications because that is where I live. After getting my address and other info, I never heard from them again.
Oh well, if you ever see Eheim bring an illuminated cannister filter to market, you'll know where they got the idea. ( :

Ninja, hope they're chewing on it and they do give you fair compensation. Anyway I've read through this entire thread for the past hour and all i can say dude is your ingenous approach rocks and it has changed my view on canisters like you said. Now for my office i plan an 18" version of your "copyright" if that's ok with you...

Do it!

I'm not really holding my breath for compensation because I didn't take a patent out and shared the idea with them freely. I would be happy just to see it on the shelves.
Thanks for the compliment - can't wait to see your tank.

Alexey,
Thank you very much for the compliment. I am actually taking a little break from reefkeeping. I am currently restoring an old motorcycle that I bought.
I have sold all of my equipment except for the tank and the cannister filter.
I already miss having it.

Regards,

- Chad

Really it is very a pity. And I wished to ask some questions...
Summing up - as you think it is possible to make in this tank a reef? Whether there will be complexities with current or light?

You're taking a break? We all know its impossible to take a break.
Once youre in you cant get out. You'll be back....

Seriously though, thats a real shame, it was such an immense tank.

Alexey,
I am sorry but I am not sure that I understand the question. If you are asking about my tank, the answer is that it was very well suited to having a nano reef. I had very good lighting and a strong turnover rate.

King,
Thanks mate. I know that you're right, I already miss the setup. I am guessing it won't be too terribly long before I start something back up. ( :

vareefer,

Thanks, I'm glad that you liked it!

Cam,

Good to hear from you again buddy. Thanks for the kind words in the NR thread.

Cheers,

Dan,

Well... actually...
Yesterday morning I packed the tank and the cannnister filter into a large box and shipped it to a buyer in Toronto.
That's right, I sold everything.
One day I looked at the tank and realized that there wasn't anything else I could do on it. Well, I could keep adding corals and watching them grow, but it seemed that I no longer had any challenges to overcome. I started to get bored after that and began toying with the idea of finding an old motorcycle to restore.
I happened to find the right bike and sold all my reef stuff to pay for it.
I am enjoying the sabatical but I can already tell that I will soon be returning to reefing. And I've already starting planning....

:D
