Nipped fins on maroon clown. Help.

I have two maroon clowns in my 24g bio cube, and I purchased them at the same time. They were in a tank by themselves and looked healthy. They were fine yesterday afternoon, but when we came back from going out the smaller maroon could barely swim because his fins are almost gone. I put him in a pasta strainer and propped it up in the tank to keep the others away. What should I do? It also appears he's starting to get ich/ white spots on his body. Please help. :(

Not much you can do at this point. Sounds like maybe they weren't a bonded pair.

It could be ich from stress. I wouldn't be too concerned about it as long as the other fish are healthy they should be ok. I would give him time to heal up then find him a new home.

Not letting me do pictures, but I have a 10g tank I picked up from a garage sale for free. It has a hang on back filter. Will that work as a temporary QT?

I have a small clown fish that had his tail nipped and got infected too the point he couldn't swim well at all. I put him in a quarantine tank and treated with Melafix and Furan-2. Hard to say how much the treatments helped but at least he had time to recover in quarantine without being harassed. I also fed him very well and he made a full recovery. Not sure what to say about ick though but I would think that would work as a quarantine tank. Maybe a small powerhead or an airstone would help. If it the tank isn't cycled you need to keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite levels.

Maroons are the hardest to pair up. Most people buy books pairs usually white outs try to pair them up using acclimation boxes and time. The are some threads on RC on how to do it.

Like Sean said if the other fish are healthy it should pass because it does sound like ich from stress but if you want to QT him the 10 gallon tank will be perfect then try an acclimation box of you really want to pair the Maroons.

With maroon clowns the size difference plays a huge factor more so then with regular clowns. In maroons you want one to be at least 1.5 inches bigger then the other if not they will fight til the death cause either will back down and one will loose. Learned the hard way twice

Wow I really should read what I type before hitting send, stupid autocorrect lol.

Little guy didn't make it, it was the emerald crabs. We noticed because the fish never attacked each other, but the crabs were always trying to snatch their fins. Took them out and moved them to my sump
