after doing almost everything to my tank to lower nitrates. i have narrowed it down to my crush coral bed. i think its retaining to much nitates. after multiple mass water changes. i can only put a small dent on lowering the nitrates. i currently sit at about 40 ppm. i just dont know what to do any more. i have a good skimmer. a fuge. and still have a problem. is there any one out there that can hook me up with some araganite. or sand

I have this problem. I tried feeding less, big water changes, cheato, etc. I got a bigger capacity skimmer and the problem when away in a few weeks. My nitrates were always around 50. Now they are 2. I am in no way a fish expert, but I do know what worked for me.

i had the same problem. already had cheato, fuge and nitrate reactor. i started dosing vodka. after about a month and half im down to 5. fequent water changes and less feeding. all worked for me.

Yes. I have big fish (triggers, puffer, tusk, rays) that are all messy eaters. I was doing large weekly water changes but I never got the nitrates below 40.

I added the larger skimmer and the water got better after a few weeks and I do not have to do the large water changes anymore.

My first skimmer was also very good but it was just too small to handle my bioload.

Cheato did nothing to help. Never tried dosing.

im almost embaraced to say how many fish i have . i have around 3 damsels , 1 squeral fish. a clown. and thats it and my natrates are 30 to 40 ppm.

Well if you read it right you should be increasing it till it drops off then cut that in half and monitor it if it goes up you add .5 more. There is no set number for a 100ga

Also I might adk do you clean the rocks off ever???

What skimmer do you have and what are your phosphate levels

What are your phosphates?

What is the g2 rated at?
I would always get a skimmer rated over your tank too.

i get a turkey baster. and i dust off the rocks. and i dont really check for phosphates cause i figure. if my nitrates are out of hand so are the phosphates. i also put in my sump. phosguard and de nitrate

Phosgaurd dowdy work well at all. Use brs gfo or wm phosphate remover or rowaphos. It works much beter in a media reactor too.

Take the de nitrate out, it probably is just hanging onto nitrates if they are that high. It not ment to be used to revmove nitates that high.

I would stay with the vodka doseing, just make sure you keep uping the dosage when it says. Vodka dose work don't give up on it make sure you calculate true water volume tank+ sump+ fuge+ prop tank anything in your system.

Also if you have crushed coral for you sand bed get rid of it!!!! Get regular sand or bar bottom if you wish. Crushed coral is no good. It just hangs onto junk.

i agree! my chaeto never grow and my xenia dies after i switch to a much larger skimmer despite of heavy feeding ...
