NM Game and Fish Stop Sale

i was at petco last night and there was a sign that said these animals are no longer for sale.

I asked the clerk and she said NMGF put a stop sale on the marine inverts and a couple other animals like the chinchilla.

Anyone else here about that?

Interesting... Does this apply to saltwater and freshwater animals? I know the saltwater trade has been under a lot of scrutiny lately but its interesting that it has managed to find its way all the way out here to our little dessert oasis.

they were still selling the fish, but none of the anemones, snails, shrimp, or featherdusters.

and somehow the poor chinchillas got caught up in the mix

I heard about it the other day and they said they are not allowed to sell inverts and corals in NM. That is crazy.

Does this just apply to the petco chain or is it no longer allowed to sell corals anywhere in new mexico, in a retail establishment? Did this hit texas also?

the clerk didn't know anything about texas (go figure) and looked on the game and fish website but didn't see anything.
not that the salt water industry in Las Cruces will be affected at all.

okay so the law has been in since 2001 or 2005 can't remember what she said, but someone got busted saleing illegally imported fish so they got mad and tattled on everyone else so it has really blown up. it is illegal for new mexican to bring it in even if it was bought down the road in el paso. So you guys better look out for us and keep us legal.
here is some info i found on the Game and Fish website. Funny i didn't find anything about inverts and the lady said she really doubted it would affect corals.

Any LFS owners know of any common fish that we keep that is not on that list? would be interesting to know.

C. Only members of the following families of fish (except as noted in Subsections D, and E of 19.35.7.8 NMAC) will be considered for importation into New Mexico:

(1) Salmonidae

(2) Esocidae

(3) Percichthyidae

(4) Ictaluridae

(5) Centrarchidae

(6) Percidae

so according to this i guess my two fish were imported illegally.

clown fish pomacentridae and potters angel pomacanthidae

since both of those families aren't on the approved list

this doesn't seem right at all.

Does this just apply to the petco chain or is it no longer allowed to sell corals anywhere in new mexico, in a retail establishment? Did this hit texas also?

I called a couple of fish stores up here in Albuquerque and they are fine, still selling everything. The Petco's are all under restricted sales.

I'm going to apply for green cards for my clown fish or do they need passports? Well like Justin said, at least this won't affect the saltwater fish trade in Las Cruces since none of us buy fish at Petco.

i think the person in charge of getting permits in order for petco fell asleep, and ****ed someone off at NMGF.

I still can't believe that new mexico is so progressive that it already has legislation to prevent the invasion of elephant butte (and other fresh water lakes and rivers) from pesky marine fish.

i was in there last night and they changed the sign and took off the NM game and fish and put up a sign that said because of Petshop law in new mexico. who knows whats going on. they are still selling fish but not inverts so im not sure what part of the law pertains to that. maybe i will waste the afternoon looking at importation laws in new mexico.

who's bill? and this wasn't about endangered species (although that was a cool link) it's about importation of problematic species. at least that is what i got from NMGF. i got nothing from Petco. they were clueless

Bill is the aquatic specialist at petco. I think that is what they where referring it to. But there is a bill (piece of paper, lol) that is brought up every year about this but it always gets thrown out.
