No More Rock Wall and Deadspots

So for awhile I've been struggling with flow, dead spots, algae issues, etc. It looked like an effin breeding ground for algae and dead spots (even with 4000+ gph). Well thanks to my buddy convincing me to take the time to do it...we took every frag and colony off, redid all of my Aqua scape. Can't wait to add more stuff (now my tank looks bare will all the extra room haha)

The old set up was so boring and just slam packed against the back wall. I'm pretty pumped to finally have no algae break out and room again lol.

You should be able to make a much more interesting tank with your new rock work. Maybe even grow stuff off the backside of the islands so that you have something interesting to look at from sides that can't be seen from the front. Not to mention happier fish with the increased swimming area.

That was the plan! I have actually the same amount of room behind the rock as I do up front. And you can see both sides of the tank, depending where you sit in my living room...so I will deff be growing stuff at all spaces/areas.

Good job on the re-scape.

When I first started to keep reef tanks I created rock/brick walls. It just did not look good and it certainly inhibited flow and made it really easy for problematic algae to take hold. Over the years I have used less and less rock with an eye towards letting the corals fill in the empty spots.

Yeah I've never done anything else for the countless tanks I've set up until now. This is literally a game changer for my tank. All corals look happy, fish has room to swim, flow is perfect...I'm so happy with it now. Now just to let everything grow out...lol

Not to get off topic but,
How is that Valentini puffer doing with your SPS? I miss not having puffers since transitioning to a reef tank. I been thinking of trying a valentini.

Rockwork looks great btw!

You're good! And thanks!

Well, I'll say this...I keep my fish fat and happy, feed 3-5 times a day seaweed, frozen and pellets. So, he's never really done anything that I've noticed and I've had him close to a year. Grant it, my friend had one who was fine for 2-3 years then one day his huge colony of birds nest was toasted. So I think it's a 50/50 shot really. I've been honestly contemplating selling him to my LFS but I just can't pull the trigger cause I'm so attached to the little dude. He's made it through 3 transfers and 1 inch break out.

Cool, that is about what I thought. I would love to have one but I may just wait and stand up another FOWLR.

Glad to hear he is working out for ya!

He came from a previous SPS tank to I felt confident with putting him in mine. But thanks, good luck :)

Started running GFO and Carbon tonight. Was running 1/3 of what I should have been of carbon. Now at the correct amount, along with GFO. Did a 20% water change again...battle against the algae is going...well. Hoping that a few more WC and the new reactor help a bit. Water was still settling when I took my crappy iPhone pic haha.

If you're running brs rox carbon be careful it is some extremely strong stuff. I only run 2 tablespoons on my 60 gallon frag system with a 240 gallon sump.

GFO is on the right (this was before I put the carbon in on the left), I'm running extremely small amount of it - my friend has been an SPS guy for 10+ years and has been guiding me in the right direction. So far his magic touch has worked wonders on this tank lol.

It's extremely tough to inhibit algae growth by nutrient removal alone... Often, it comes at the detriment of your corals.. Why not add 30-40 snails? I don't think I is see many in the pics.. They'll go a long way to controlling algae..

As of right now, I have about 15...and honestly they don't do much at all. I have never had a huge clean up crew, in any of my tanks. Which I might change that...Also until I get rid of my puffer, he has a tendency to kill them LOL.
