No more Salifert for me

I have always used Salifert, but recently they fialed me big time.

I use the alk test kit, and the reading was 9.6,9.2 .... but my corals experience burned tips, so supecting that my alk is not right, I borrowed a lamote test kit for Bob. Lamote reading was 13 ....yike!!! no wonder

I also have been using the mag test kit from salifert, my reading was 1100, so I have been adding techM to raise it, the number stayed the same after adding mag, so I used Bob's salifert mag test kit and the reading was off the chart>1500 ... YIKE!!! no wonder my sps have been suffering ... my lps is loving the alk but this goes to show that Salifert is not reliable.

I am throwing out all my salifert test kits and switching over to Lamote for alk, and Elos for the other tests.

I think at the January meeting, we should bring water samples and all of our test kits and compare results because test kits do go bad.

Tom,

I've used the la Motte for a long time now on Steve Ruddy's recomendation. He's been using them for years. The Seachem calcium seems real good also.

I don't understand? Why are you giving up a brand that has been giving you multiple years of success? Maybe you had a bad test kit? Just makes me wonder if you had years of success and had one problem that you would jump ship so fast. I use both salifert and Elos based on diffrent parameters. Good luck

***I think its wise to have a spare test kit just incase. It cost money but maybe just get ALK since thats the base along with mag.....

I have been reading and notice that a lot of people are giving up on Salifert, I didnt believe it so I kept on using it, but it has failed me also, so I am switching to something more reliable. It is as simple as that

Doesn't Lamotte read in ppm. What is the conversion to meq/L?

Chris, yes. I use a factor for the conversion (don't remember right off hand but my old salifert test kit has a conversion table too). I turned off my calcium reactor and my alk is coming down so hopefully soon the number will be in check.

Thanks James for the chart, that is very helpful.

I received my new test kits yesterday, Lamotte alk, and elos mag+cal. I love the Lamotte kit, the only thing I wished is it comes with better instruction. The Elos mag test kit is a PAIN to use, am trying out the Elos calcium test kit tonight.

I don't blame you. Try some other brands since Salifret dropped the ball. Incorrect alk readings could cause some serious losses.

I switched from Sailfret to API for alk/dh.
