I have actual experience w/ No Sick Fish-Ick Treatment. I have a 125 w/ a few fish, a shrimp, crabs and a few snails. A real easy tank. A couple of months ago, I saw the very beginning signs of ick. All 5 fish had ick.
The thought of setting up a QT, taking out the rock, getting the fish out, using copper, etc. just wanted to make me puke. Thus, I took a chance and plunked down $58. I started using NSF as prescribed three days after the very first signs of ick. The ick was getting worse over those 3 days, but still not real bad.
The small case of ick started clearing a few days latter and by the 6th day the ick looked clear. However, the ick could have just been in the cycle where you don’t see it. But, on that 6th day the shrimp looked real stressed (and probably would have diedâ€"don’t know that for sure) and the crabs were slowing down. Thus, I turned the skimmer back on and quit using NSF.
Over the next several weeks I did a 25% water change each week, watched the parameters closely, and feed the fish heavily. One fish still has just a touch of ick. The other 4 look okay. I see ick on the one fish every couple of days and mostly in the mornings. What do I do? Put a couple of drops of NSF in the tank w/ the skimmer running. I quit doing the 25% water changes. I am hoping the fish will be able to kick the ick on its own.
The bottom line: I think something is working in that snake oil. The NSF does appear to keep the ick down. I suspect I will probably have to set up a QT and take out that one fish some time. But, I will do it on a weekend of my choosing.
