Noise from new Loop system

OK.. so I got my pump, got my parts and built the loop system. works great. made out of 1" pvc. right at the pump I have the disconnects and then just beyond those I have the ball valves. pump runs 1500 gph. with valves wide open I get a rattling noise. I thought it might be air, but I have no microbubbles. I tried restarting the system several times, but nothing. it does not sound at all like a rattling impeller. noise stops when I turn return valve down a bit, but this also reduces flow. noise also goes away turing off the supply line, but I have to turn it down further. I was thinking it was the connector as the hole in then is much smaller diameter than the pvc itself. maybe it is the water gurgling? sounds like a piece of plastic rattling inside the pipe (best explanation I can give.)

Any ideas would be helpful. Also, I will be tearing the system down on friday to move it, so hopefully it can be fixed then.
 
you could try connecting the pump to your pvc with vinyl tubing on the input and output with barb adapters? It might solve any of your pumps vibrations/noise you might be getting traveling up the rigd pvc.
 
Also I'm just guessing but you might need a 1 1/2" intake with that much flow. What size/type of pump is it?
 
pump is pentair quietone 6000. 1506 gph. has 1" connections on both sides. my thoughts are that the noise is coming from the quick disconnects. they seem to have a much smaller diameter than the pipe itself. It really does not sound like pump vibration. it is too much of a rattle than a hum, and when you get down there, it seems to come from above the pump I think. I have a hum, but that is really my own fault (didnt do a good job of building fill spout around my canopy.)
 
My best guess is Cavitation. I'd go with a 1 1/2" intake on it as well. and switching to the Vinyl will only help quiet things.

Are you running a SCWD on this loop? they make that grinding noise also.

I was going to suggest cavitation, also... A larger inlet will ensure that the pump sees less loss and more flow (upon a sharp entrance, eddies form that can reduce flow into the stream of the piping-larger diameter reduces the effect of the eddies). I'm about to plumb my PCX-55 (for my MRC MR2) into the side of my fuge inlet and will be using a 1 1/2" bulkhead. I was originally going to go with 1 1/4", but happen to have a 1 1/2", so I figure it can't hurt.
 
shucks.....will i need to redo everything??? or just the inlet side. will openinh up the connectors help without redoing the entire system?

You should be fine with just the inlet side. That will ensure good feed to the pump. After that, the system should pressurize and become stable.
 
well, I went ahead and went to 1.5" at both the inlet and outlet side of hte pump. I do have to step it down to get into the pump. the noise however is still there, although noticeably quieter. I do think I have some air trapped somewhere in the system as I see a few bubbles blown out every so often. I can also see a difference in the ammt of flow as well.

Gary, Maybe when you come over to help me move on friday you can take a look at it and help me out.. What do you say like 2 or 3 pm on Friday?
 
1.5 on the intake would have been all it took. Are you sure you dont have a seeper on the intake side, letting in air? Are you using any threaded fittings or all glued fittings?
I too thought cavatation, but now I dont think that was what it was....Hard to say w/o seeing it personally..got any pics?
 
not sure about seepers as I have not turned off the system. I have about 5" of straight run before the pump. it is 1" pipe. then to 1.5 for the valves and unions and then back to 1" to the tank. talked with my brother the mech engineer, and he told me it should work this way. UGH. well, we shall see.
 
Let's shot for 2 on Friday. I don't think I've got any meetings past noon, so I should be able to work my way out a little early. PM with some info on where you are.
 
Issue Solved, or at least diagnosed. it is not the plumbing nor the way I installed it. it is the stinking pump! I ran in in the bath tub this morning, and it makes the same impeller noise there. UGH!!!!
 
Is the shaft okay? I had a ViaAqua pump that I was using as a return and it started to rattle. Finally it quit and I found the impellor shaft was broken...
 
Brand spanking new. I think by adding some head pressure to the system it will help as the pump gives a head pressure rating of like 15 foot!.
 
well, I bought some reductions elbows 1" to 1/2" and this has helped somewhat. I can tell the rattle is less, but they also add to the turbulence in the tank. WOW do they ever. now I will avhe to lower them down a bit to keep them form creating so much turbidity in the water it is about to splash out. I even have my own little whirlpool by the front glass where bubbles are getting caught.
 
1 to 1/2 is a lot of reduction, rethink reduction, go with 1 to 3/4 and see what happens if you are sure the pump is not the issue.
