Noise From Skimmer Question

I have a Euro Reef Skimmer and had to buy a new Gen-X pump.

The problem is that the the air being sucked in is extremely loud like someone sucking on a have empty straw.

Any ideas??

My Tank Sits up against my garage wall and I was thinking og getting about 5' of hose and running the air intake out there.

the muffler idea is a quick and easy fix..
works just like your car muffler does..

i used a 35mm film canister on mine...

about 4 inches from the end of you airline just use scissors and cut it...
then make a whole in the top of the film canister

and one hole in the bottom of the actuall film canister.

these wholes should be just big enough where the airline hose fits snug..

bubble king uses them (look at the 5th picture going down)

I just stuck a smaller piece of tubing in the end of my venturi and quited it right up.
thanks for the idea. I just did it and what a difference it makes. Now I need to get the gurgling sound from the return on the skimmer to stop.

Doesn't smaller tubing = reduced airflow = reduced performance?

All the mods for skimmer venturi I've seen was to increase the airflow into the venturi.

been trying it on and off over the past 3-4 weeks and didnt seem to make much of a difference either way from what i can tell. the piece of tubing is just big enuff to fit into the opening of the larger one, it's no more than like 1/8" long or something.

I tried to do the 35mm film can thing, and seemed to take it down to a different kind of rumbling but was still kinda noisy....and wouldnt the cotton ball restrict the air to a certain degree as well?

I used the film canister too...worked well. The cotton ball didn't seem to affect anything, however, I think it acted more like an air filter, so changing it out may be beneficial over time.

I have a Bubble Master with a small diffuser like the ones described above, and it makes NO noise. I love it. As far a restricting the air intake, it must. But, to whatever degree it quiets the skimmer down, it might be the lesser of two evils.
