Noisy 6100

Hi

I just installed a brand new TS24 with 2 x 6100's mounted into Tunze Stream rocks. I have checked that the pumps are not touching any other rock.

These have now been running for about 3 weeks and they are still very noisy. I get a low growl/vibration at low speed and a it seems to increase as the speed increases. I can hear it from other rooms in the house so it must be quite bad.

I have read that these pumps should be silent.

Please help, it's the wife or the tank

Open the pump and check that the bush bearing is fully inserted, this piece often moves in shipping. Try prying it out, turning it 180 degrees and pushing it back in, install the drive unit under water and give it a firm push, this usually fixes this problem.

Would you by any chance have a photo or diagram of the bush bearing that I need to get out?

Is this inside the pump where the rotor inserts into?

It is the collar around the hole that the prop sits in, you will see two indentations and you pry it out with a slotted screwdriver. There is a thread at the top of this forum on pump mainatanence that has pictures.

OK, done all that and they are both still vibrating and noisy. I checked the collars, cleaned everything and even swapped the impellers. The left pump remains the loudest but both are noisy.

I moved the tunze rocks/mounts around a bit and with careful positioning and lots of patience I have got the noise down a little. But it still drones and can be heard over a moderate TV volume.

When I suspend the pump in the water by hand I can feel a bit of vibration and can still hear it buzz, but nowhere near as bad as when in position.

Should there be any vibration at all on these pumps? Should they be absolutely silent or is a slight buzz/drone normal?

Should these sit on top of other rocks? Do then need some sort of rubber feet?

I am just expecting too much?

There will be some droning noise from them but it really shouldn't be audible in another room. In the rock holder the rock should be on top of other rocks, not on the glass ideally. The pump should also be relatively isolated, only inserted in the outlet on the rock and not touching other rocks. I can only hear mine when I am right up to the tank. It may be worth trying the included hardware only to see if it is the pump or the way it is installed.

I am gonna try the collar again and give it a really hard push. Should it be flush with the front housing?

Almost flush, but it does stick up a bit.

OK Done, rotated 180 and pushed back as hard as I can. Pushed the rotor in hard, under water.

Still noisy, I can easily hear them over 15 meters away but then run out of house, so can't check any further. By saying that you cannot hear yours at 1 meter you have put this into perspective for me. I would be very happy indeed if I can get them down to that.

I will give it a few weeks and see if they get quite . I am running them in pulse mode min to max with 10 second intervals. Is this OK?

Is there anyone near you that you can take them too? Either you hear better than a dog or something is wrong, within 2 weeks 80% of the wear in is complete so it really is not likely to get much quieter without some change of the installation or the drive unit.

I have had a reply from Zunze UK who have asked me to run the pumps at full power with the controller removed for a couple of days.

They tell me that it's not normal to get noise after a few weeks of running.

I will keep you informed.

Here is an update for you.

I have been running them on full power without the controller for 3 days. I have changed the rock mounts to magnet mounts (which actually give me better placement)

and ...... the pumps are now silent. I have reconnected the controller and I am not able to hear them at any power setting even when close to the tank.
