Noisy Chromis?

I have noticed that when my MH's go out and just my actinics are on that I hear a low pitched knocking sound from my tank. I have 4 full grown blue/green Chromis and before they go to their bedrooms they chase each other back and forth. It seems that when they stop and start I hear the noise. It almost sounds like they are running into the glass but they are not. I don't observa anything else that could explain the sounds. Strange as it sounds it really seems to be the fish that are making this noise. Has anyone else noticed this?

I've heard domino damsels do the same.
plus my 4 strip damsel used to do it, but I presumed it was the sound of it hitting the other fish (I gave the damsel away)

I have never heard of chromis doing that. Interesting. never know what you will learn. You should get a video.

No new rock for 10 years except for dead rock. No mantis or pistol shrimp. If the sound is made by them ramming into each other they would be black an blue because I can hear the sound from accross the room when it is quiet. Always something new with this hobby.

BTW, Blue/green Chromis are wonderful fish for any tank.

Did you know that betta fish (Chinese fighting fish), which are freshwater, also make that noise.
I've been trying to decide whether I have a mantis shrimp or its is my Bangaii Cardinal that is making the crazy loud (knocking) sound.
Very interesting that a chromis might make the sound.

Mark, I confirm that. :)

I have some Blue Chromis in my tank and the sound they make is like a knock on the glass but they are not even close to the glass. They are posing to each other and making those sounds, like this:

When I had a school they did all the time. I'm down to one chromis now though and never hear it anymore.

clown fish make clicking noise.. so i would think that all damsel fish can do it ..chromis damsel and clowns are in the same fam

I have some blue chromis and pistol shrimp, I dont know who's doing it but I have plenty of noise coming from my tank.

This is a pretty old thread.. but I've got a school of 4 black axil chromis and I also heard them emitting a strange knocking sound.. I had to do a web search and apparently I'm not alone. weird. Just had to post.

Funny I noticed this last week as my Black Axil Chromis seem to make a knocking sound when they chase one another.
