noisy tunze 6055

Roger,

I have an older 6055, but updated the prop and disc. Lately its been acting up and being very loud...almost sounds like a Harley.

It doesn't start instantaneously once power is supplied, but when it does, sounds like metal hitting metal/clickity-clackityish. I ran it without the front housing so I know its not the prop making contact with it. I also soaked it in vinegar and that didnt help either.

Any advice?

thanks

Is the metal shaft firmly in place in the pump, the shaft should never pull out. Occasionally I see an older 6055 where the drive unit cemented to the shaft and was forcibly removed and the shaft was pulled out with it. In this case the shaft should be removed from the drive unit and there is a small chance it can be reinserted into the motor and firmly seated with a hammer (light repeated taps and they must be straight on or the shaft will bend) or hydraulic press. The other possibility is the disk is upside down, the black plastic faces up to the propeller base and the old disks must have been removed before the new one is installed. If the prop magnet is dragging on the blue silicon rubber it will hesitate to start and make a chattering noise.

Roger,
So the metal shaft is firmly attached. I don't think it ever been pulled out by accident. I tried soaking it again in vinegar, and it ran for a little while until the problem begun to replicate, and then finally seizing. I checked the disc to make sure it was properly inserted also. The blue silicone rubber you speak of, I am unsure what that part is.

The blue silicon was added in late 2010. Before that it was a different disk without this part. At this point I think the best course is to send in the pump and power supply for diagnosis/ repair. Just be sure to include a return address and phone number in the box.
