Have you checked out the Canon S2 or S3? I believe you can actually place something directly onto the lens and taken a picture (light source needed from the back of course), can't really beat that for macros.
the best point and shoot i have ever used so far is the Olympus C-4000.. I have tried different cannon, nikon, pentax, etc.. but nothing come close to the Super Macro ability with the C-4000.. too bad they discontinue it a long time ago.. I love this camera so much and went on ebay last week and bought 5 used units for backups. I got them all for $80 or less each!
