Non-Jumpers

I am in the process of stocking a rimless, topless 34 gallon tank. Looking for small fish that don't jump( or at least have a smaller chance of doing so). Any ideas?

I'm interested in this thread. I've had fish jump that I never thought would jump so I just assume all fish jump.

A friend of mine had a saying.. The only fish that don't jump are... Dead fish

+1...since we've been "specializing" in Scorpaeniformes, I've seen fish that should NOT be jumpers, ever, jump. It's always fun trying to pick up a venomous fish with one eye open at 3 AM.

About the only fish that I can say CAN'T jump are SH...

I think the general rule is that the more torpedo like a fish is, the more likely it is to be an eager jumper. Firefish/wrasses are right at the top, while fish like clownfish or frogfish are pretty unlikely. That said, every fish is a possible jumper in the right circumstances and running with a 24/7 open top will probably result in a jumper eventually.

Flame angel, coral beauty angel, yellow watchman, six line wrasse, anything that stays more towards the bottom has a smaller chance of jumping.

Sardaukar, that is a very good observation. I never noticed the correlation between body shape and jumping, but I think you are spot on. I had an orange firefish I would pull from my overflow twice a day.

What about peoples experience with anthias? Again, I understand everything is at risk of jumping. Some are guaranteed (think fairy wrasses) I am just looking for less likely.

Actually sixline wrasses are notorious jumpers. All fish can jump, most fish, under the proper stimulus will jump.

I know people who have had angels jump and six lines will jump. I have had gobies (dracula) that live in burrows jump.

I wouldn't trust with ANY SW fish. Even my clownfish jumped once, hit the netting and bounced off to the overflow. I've had to give him a rollercoaster ride to the filter sock.

Scooter blenny is a good one...great little fish with a cool disposition.
Tank's too small to be sure the scooter will get enough to eat. Also, I had one that jumped more than once. I've even had small shrimp jump. As others have said, some fish are worse than others, but jumping is a real risk for just about any fish in an uncovered tank.

If you're going to run an open topped tank, you just have to be prepared for jumpers. I've had mandarins jump while my wrasse was in the tank for over a year until one night I spooked him. And like rssjsb my sexy shrimp jumped once.

I don't think I've ever heard of a seahorse jumping..? Just a thought.
