noob question

hey guys,

i did a search and read that crocea clams like to be placed on rock. but what about the other types of clams? i.e. maxima and derasa. do they also prefer rock or do they like sand? thanks.

My maximas certainly seem to prefer attachment to something firm like a small rock or shell. I didn't attempt to find a rock for my Derasa due to the size I knew it would achieve and my concern for being able to move it if I need to. I do have it on puka shell substrate and have seen no evidence of it trying to attach to the shells. That is the only of the larger clams that I have though and that is just my experience.

Yes to the T. maxima part. Not sure to the sand part for the Derasa. The feel of a puka shell substrate may be much different than the feel of sand to them - I can't say. Puka shell substrate is much more rock-like, which was my intention when I used that for my clam tank. Several of my clams have attached their threads to the pieces of shell and seem quite happy - yet it is easy for me to pick them up for inspection, cleaning or whatever.

The frogfish is my pal Fuggly! :D He has turned yellow since that picture was taken but he/she is still fascinating!
