Noooooooo!!!!!! Stupid Heat Wave......

I got into work yesterday morning and noticed that the 24G tank looked kind of cloudy. As I got closer to inspect it, it had a slight rotten egg smell. The pink tipped frogspawn was completely recessed, 1 Acro colony was almost bleached white. I turned around and checked out the 16G tank and found all 3 blastos shrunken, although everything else seemed ok. The first thing that I checked was the temp, since these are 2 separate systems and not tied in at all. Both thermometer read >84 :eek2: This is 8 in the morning!!! I wondered what the temp was during the daytime, must have been pretty high to maintain that temp over night.

I know the building A/C turns off after hours, but I have never had any heat issues before, although this is the first summer in this particular building.

So I quickly did some water changes (luckily I had brought in some premixed water from home) and just hoped for the best.

This morning, the frog still looks the same but lost another Acro colony in the 24G tank. Everything else looks ok and all the rics are somewhat back to normal. But the 16G tank is not doing that well at all. The tissue on the neon green blastos are almost completely gone. Lost 3 heads of my Dendros. The tissue on the ice blue chalice looks like it's peeling off (I hope some part of it makes it :( ). Also looks like I am going to lose a couple of chalice frags.

I did some more additional water changes on both tanks but I am out of premixed saltwater. What else should I or can I do? Sorry for the long post. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some pix of what the corals look like.

Bummer! Sounds like some mini chillers are in order

Try running a polyfilter and/or some purigen to get the nasties out of the water. Add strontium to help keep the meat attached to the bone

Not much you can do--high or low heat are the two things that kill corals dead :(

Oh man. At least you will be getting some relief from the heat this week, but I suspect the tank *cooked* over the hot weekend with no AC.

How are the fish?

Nicole hit it... If the AC is off over night, the weekends will be murder.

That sucks! I guess tht is a perfect reason for me not even consider an office tank.

Damn man, summer sucks. Sorry to hear about your tank.

The same thing happened to me yesterday. I came home after a long day at lake elsinore and my water temp was at 90! My tank looks like hell, I might have to start over. -_-

I'll try the strontium, but it may be too late to save some of the chalices.

The fish actually fared ok over the ordeal. My true perc pair, onyx pair, and a YWG all survived. I only lost a cleaner shrimp from the 24G.

It's not that hard to keep an office tank. The problem is that the current building I am in is older, probably not insulated very well. I didn't have heat issues during the summer while in the previous building. I do use fans, but will get a couple of better fans to help with evaporative cooling.

dont feel bad. i had a few casualties...tank got up to 88ish. poor circulation in my house and the ac is broken...........

Sorry to hear about your losses. I am just sad to lose these beautiful animals. On the bright side, since I have done all these water changes, the remaining SPS are showing some insane polyp extension

My office is 70deg. 24/7 I guess that’s one good thing about my job my tank loves its climate controlled environment

John, I think I need to move into your office. Got some extra space for a large desk and a couple of tanks ;)

Steve, I had one of those before and it didn't really work. A decent chiller would cost too much for what I am running here. So fans it will be

Cliff, I did have a fan but it wasn't enough. So I just picked up a couple of Honeywell Super Turbo fans from Linens-n-Things. They should do the trick
