I wouldn't call it normal. Normal for an LTA would be to almost immediately begin to dig into the sand. They like their foot and column buried in a deep sand bed. Hopefully yours will soon settle in and dig into your sand bed. What are your water parameters and lighting?
Maybe it needs to be adjusted to the lights. Did you acclimate it with window screening? It may have hid pending on what kind of lighting it was under previously
