North Dakota Mini-Ocean

Great News that the Butterfly and Angels are doing well in the 600!!!

What happened with the Anthias??? They can be quite difficult.

I read some where to feed anthias like crazy when qetting. Like at least 5-10 times a day if you can find what they like. What type of food were you giving them? I have lost a few anthias in the past and really want to try them again just curious what happened with yours?

I was feeding like 3 times per day. I did not medicate them at all. I knew they had some done at the wholesaler. Of the 27 anthias I lost 14 so far. The rest seem to be okay, but who knows.

Were most the Bartletts?

I got 5 Resplendent anthias in last week when the Ventralis didn't come in. (they are very cool fish by the way) And im feeding them 5-10 times a day with mysis and brine mixed with some extra vitamins.

Anyway, once they were eating good for a few days i added 50% copper to the tank then left it for 4 days to make sure noone had a negative reaction. Then i added the rest and watched to make sure everyone was still acting normala nd eatting well. This way the copper will kill velvet and ich so it doesn't get the upper hand on them...

I know how horrible it woudl be if an anthias brought velvet to your tank and it went after your angels!!!

No they were the purple queens and other assorted anthias. I still have 5 or 6 of the Bartletts left (from 12). I think I am down to 10 total left out of 27.

On a side note I noticed a few of my corals have brown (dead) tips and others have lost the vivid coloration from a few months ago. I also have a bit of what I call "red slime" algea on a few of the rocks. It will come for a couple days and then die off from that spot and then go to another spot and has repeated the cycle for a 4-6 weeks span. I also notice some bubbles (nitrogen?) on some of the rocks. I have been feeding very heavy as my fish love it, but I am assuming that is the culprit behind the decline in the coral coloration and tip die off? Any suggestions what to do?

That sucks about the Anthias man!

The increase in feeding is most likely the issue. I had the same problem and I have been using some Zeo supplements to help nitrify the bacteria. I use ZeoSTart2 daily, and ZeoBak and CoralSnow 2x weekly. Before, I had a ton of bubbles on the rocks and sand and a nice layer of algea always on the sand. Now it is gone!!!

How about some pictures of the Angels and butterflys in the 600!!!

I did quite a bit of research on it before i decided to go that route. It is similar to dosing Vodka(didn't work good for me!), prodibio, zeo, ect...

One thing w/ adding the zeo supplements is that you need to add it slowly and your alk needs to be around 8. there is a zeo forum at zeovit.com that has a ton of info. for my 400 gallon system i add
0.9 mL of Start2 twice a day
2x per week i add
15ml coralsnow and 15 drops Zeo Bak

This did have a tremendous effect on my tank but every tank is different. This just helps feed the bacteria so it is grows larger and is big enough to be skimmed out of the tank...

Like I said there are many different ways to do this and you need ot be sure of what you are putting into yoru tank so you do not do more harm than good!

Incredible!!!

Just WOW!!! I cant wait until I have the funds to aquire my specimens!!! Man they are nice!

So how are they with the coral? Im very interested to see how the Wrought Iron and the Clarion do with the SPS!!!

Oh, how about a Video when you get the chance!!!

Your tank was amazing before, but with that group added .... That's a WOW!!! factor to be sure!

Thank you for the nice compliments. My tank has a long way to go before I am satisfied with it.

A couple things I did yesturday...

1 - I turned off the kalk reactor. I will do this for a week to see how the system reacts to this. The calcium reactor is still on with about 1 drop per sec.

2 - Lowered the salinity to 1.025 (was at 1.029).

3 - Added 70 different varities of snails. I will add another 70 in a couple weeks.

I have been reading studying for too long getting ready for my next tank build. Here in Bakersfield I have to cool or heat tank for 10 months of the year. I would like to know how you keep temp. ideal in your setup,if I believe what I here it never gets above 40 degrees where you live maybe you don't need a chiller, lol, any advice on heat cooling would be great.

Yeah you know the iceberg in the back yard helps keep the tank cool and the engine heat from the wood chipper can warm it up when needed ;)

Last I saw the tank (It's been too long for sure) all that was on there was fans for evaporative cooling and heaters in the sump for heating. I don't know for sure the size of the heaters but I do know the fans are basically a really well built bank of PC fans on each end of the tank. I can't remember if other supplimental fans were still on there or not. There is a controller in place to make sure they aren't fighting each other too. It's a very basic, proven and reliable temp management process. He'd be able to give more specifics though...

I have basically the same setup on my tiny 75 with just fans for cooling and a heater for heating. It works really well for me.

Bakersfield CA... You can have tanks there with all the earthquakes ;)

It's tough they have to be built on stands with ball bearings at the base and leave plenty of room. Are the couple of 100 people who live in up there Viking die hards like me or do they enjoy the Cheese heads?
