North Dakota Mini-Ocean

The seaweed you shipped is a favorite among all the tangs in the tank!! They just go nuts over that stuff.

Unfortunate news...

The Crosshatch Triggers, Tinkerii Butterfly, and Goldflake Angel all died in the past 72 hours. They were all in the QT/Frag system together (all spaced about 1 week apart). The levels were fine when I checked this past sunday and then the Tinkerii died on Tuesday and the Goldflake on Wednesday and the Triggers this morning. The only fish alive is the Kole Tang.

When I had the Tinkerii and the Kole Tang in the system with around 100 frags I had no problems. Once the Triggers and Angel were added then everything was fine for week and then this...Nothing is different from the main system. Makes you really scratch your head.

oh man, sorry to hear about that! All but the tang...strange. Koles aren't especially hardy either. I would think it would go before a trigger. And you're running UV on the QT right?

Have you tested the tank for stray voltage?

No UV on the QT. Just Carbon. I did not test for voltage yet...But good idea. None of the Corals had a hint of RTN or STN in the QT either.

And I have the real fish coming in a couple days...I might have the guy hold em for a few more days.

Triggers never ate. But i've been told they don't for about a week. The Triggers came straight from the ocean. The Kole, Tinkerii, and Angel were eating just fine. I am just wondering if there was an ammonia spike in the QT system. That is the only thing that makes sense of all this. Maybe those 5 fish in 100 gallons was too much. The only fish that had some ick on it was the tinkerii and that was gone in a few days after arriving. none of the other fish died with ick on them.

There was no temp swings (temp always at 79-81). The triggers were never swimming around per say. They just kinda hid amongst the rocks and looked around.

Loses do always suck...even if they are chromis. It just sucks to see the display fish so vibrant and full of energy and then all those Qt ones die and there isn't much you can do about it.

I bought all the fish from Hawaii from a wholesaler. He said he is going to find me some cool replacements for free! So that is good news.

Out of curiosity, how long were they in transit?

I did some more testing on the water and found I had ammonia in the water. I did a salifert test and the results were high. The color scale was yellow not the really high orange.

i was going to say most likely it was ammonia...that happened to me as well. had a couple of tangs and a couple other fish in a 52g that was a frag tank and an ammonia spike wiped them all out in a day. by the time i found out what had done them in, it was too late. sorry to hear about your losses but glad you figured it out before you get more fish in there. maybe 1 or 2 fish in qt at a time should keep it from happening again. once again, sorry about the loss.

Weirdest part of this whole ordeal is I had 10 chromis, 2 tangs, 3 anthias, and a couple cleaner shrimp in the same setup sbd nothing died. The crosshatch pair was probably just too much.

That ultimately was the issue for me too, in the sense that I built a QT with the idea of dealing with one fish at a time, but the fact is, those with larger tanks tend to bring in more fish in one shot. I am surprised it had no effect on the corals, but it is entirely possible it will be delayed by a day or two.

Sorry to hear of the QT loss, that is always discouraging. It is nice that your supplier is backing you up though.

I also have some cool news...

I am working on a larger tank that will be housed at my cabin. 15.5'L x 5'W x 3'T ~ 1700 Gallon Display. It will be a Large Specimen tank with some coral. I will keep everyone up to date as thing progress, but I am getting the tank made by Midwest Custom Aquariums. The sheets will be made by Reynolds.
