Not out of the hobby yet! Need suggestions

Hey all! I still haven't given up yet. Time for me to try (again) to get the tank in shape...

Two things I need right now:

1. I need flow. I bought some of those Jebao wavemakers but all three died within a year. Any suggestions of something I can "set and forget" for flow in my tank?

2. I need some zero maintenance fish. Like, some fish that could live entirely off the 7 foot long forest of hair algae I have grown, preferably. Pretty would be nice but it's not my first concern right now. I just need to get the tank back in action while I clean it up. A decent bioload from a fish that doesn't require a lot of care should be perfect. Any thoughts?
 
I really like the gyre. One would probably move your entire tank. Kegogut picked one of the Jaebo models a while back and seems to be happy with it. Check with him on his thoughts.
Foxface maybe?
 
Can't go wrong with ecotech vortechs :) could also upgrade your return pump if drain pipes can handle it.
 
It's uasusly just the power supply that goes out on the Jebao powerheads and they are cheap to replace. Theven ecotech mp40 power supplies will work on them if you want one more reliable.

I did get the Jebao gyre and so far so good. It gives alot of wide flow with a few different options. Ive only had it a few months so I cant testify to the longevity of it but Im happy with the product thus far.

I was thinking of a foxface too TBH.
 
Sounds like you need to check your RO unit. Run some GFO and get a tang or 3.

As for flow you know its a gamble on any of the powerheads you choose with cost being an issue.

Thanks for the advice. Just some background, to better understand the situation...

Several months ago, my tank crashed, and I separated the sump as a quarantine to save what I could. Since then I have only done occasional water changes, focusing on the sump instead. There were no fish left behind in the display, but some corals and part of a CUC are in there still. They all seem to be ok, and I had the water tested today. The PO4 and NO3 are good, but most likely it is because the algae ate it all up over the last few months.

At this point the tank is healthy but overrun with algae, and no bioload. I need to start gradually increasing the bioload as though it were a new tank, but I also need to deal with a forest of unchecked algae growth.

You raise a valid point about quality flow prices. Going cheap is most likely why I am buying again.

I went by Seascape for a water test, and I noticed they have sea hares in stock. I'm starting to think I might get one of those and a tang that is known for algae eating. Any suggestions on that kind of tang? Otherwise the foxface is definitely a possibility.
 
I have a Desjardinis tang that is constantly picking at the algae I have in my tank. My Powder Brown does the same thing. As well as the Foxface.

If I were going to for a good looking Foxface, I'd go for the Magnificent Foxface, not the ordinary yellow ones. There are several other varieties of Rabbitfish that in hindsight I would have rather put in my tank.

Of the three I have, I like the Powder Brown the best.
 
I would buy a couple sea hares and watch and wait till they eradicate your gha. Once your gha is gone take them back to the lfs.
 
For the algae, I'd first figure out what kind you have since treatment options are going to vary.

If you have bryopsis, the only thing to do is kent marine tech-m.

If it's GHA, you have options. Maybe a couple turbo snails (if you put too many in, you risk them dying off when the food supply runs out), a yellow tang or any other for that matter (pick your favorite), and a foxface. seahare would work too, but I don't have any experience with them.

If you have bubble algae, try a foxface and some emerald crabs.

I know the phos was good, but consider running GFO to strip the nutrients the algae is using.

Just an update for the good of the cause...

I picked up a sea hare today and we'll see how he does. I'll maybe add a tang or a foxface in a week or so, depending on how the sea hare does.

M3P, it is definitely GHA.
