Not sure what I am doing total noob!

Reef N Discus

New member
Hey guy/gals I am a nooby to reef clubs, slat water, reef keeping, corals, inversts, ect, ect, ect, LOL!

Ok well not a total noob, I have had a freshwater tank for a long long time, and I recently sold a 55 gallon freshwater Discus Display tank to make the plunge into the full blown reef tank society. I have a 75 gallon reef ready tank. I had been lurking around on this and other forums Decided to make RC my perminant home for all my SW Reef knowledge sense my registration date. I had read and read and did some more reading on this forum a good 6 months or longer before I even signed up. I though SW would be to hard for me and way to expensive to get into as many of you may know depending on what you want the intial by into this hobby if your doing it correctly and your doing full blown reef and not just a FOWLR system its very expensive. I did try the Cregs list thing for some items but I and my wife wanted me to and urged me to just do it rite and get basically everything brand new. Well other than the dual 175w MH pendants with Dual balast I know its like the life blood of most the inverts I plan on adding go figure this is the one thing I would buy used duh! But other than that everything is brand new, excpt for I converted one of my 30 gallon tanks into the sump I know I know what your thinking but very very little if not ever ever did I use copper in this tank and my hermits and snails have been doing great if that would be nay indication of a copper issue?

So any ways I had a fellow reefer who I traded a couple discus to for a sweat hook up of about 20lbs of LR and about 80lbs of agronite established sand in additon to actual live sand from his sump to add to my fuge/sump and my now being seeded 80lbs Marco's Dry Rock my system never went thru a cycle of any kind. It has been running for slightly over 3 weeks now and I have just one clown I feed daily with Spectrum small pelets and about 5 Scarlet hermits little guys and 5 Margarita snails & 1 Turbo Snail a bigger guy I added a couple to my sump fuge as well. I have some base rock in the fuge with the LS but Iam in desprate need of some Chato I went the TFP in Lanc PA but they did not have any. Well my fish and crabs and snails been in the system for almost a week and a half still my numbers never budge and I was told by many an exp RC members I would not have any maybe a slight cycle and the reefer whom I did the trading with calls me almost on a daily basis to ask how things are going with the system and to give me advice. I would not have add anything to the tank that soo if it were not for him he told me he was sure to give me enough from his establised 2 gallon tank thats been running for 3 and a half years that I would not cycle and he told he with the amount of bacteria I have inorder to keep it alive I would need something in there to prouce waste/food for the bacteria.

WELL To make a looooong story short I NEED A REEF CLUB TO CALL HOME BAAAAAD! I am willing to do just about anything to join one. I live in York PA behind the Harley Factory off of route 30. I thought there was one in Lancaster but I can not find it. I emailed a guy from what I thought was that club and sadly no one ever got back to me. The reason for the long intro was just to tell you a bot about me, and my system so you all would no were I was at with everything and so forth so you could better help me out if that makes sense I have learned to provide as much info as possible if you want to get accurate advice.

So any way I would like to find a home club, some chato, I have no frags or nothing, oh and I would love to speak to some folks face to face about reefing even have some one come over and look at my system so I can tell them what I have been doing to look my set up over offer pointers and so ona dn so forth also I would love to start reading some books on reefing, corals, saltwater in general. WORST OF ALL, I am a contract employee at York Internatinal JCI now and I am being laid off after 11 months of service and about 5 contract renewals TODAY IS MY LAST DAY! and so I am going to get one more check and file for Unemployemnt and so on and so forth but I need to get some things on a budget, I never was able to get my media reactor yet I hav an HOT Magnum 250 from my freshwater tank I kpet and plan to use this as a media reator to run some GFO for now. I am going out to day to buy some supliment so that I have them I was thinking of getting this product from Brightwells it called Liquid Reef the reason why is it seem to be an all in one for additives and I can not really aford to buy a bunch of difrent things rite now if you know what I mean is this stuff good to use? my calcium is low at 340 my alk is good at 14dkh I use Kents Super DKH for that, I dont have a mag kit or phosphate kit yet, but I have an api Master kit for Amonia Nitrate, Nitrite, PH, Alk or dkh, a cheap hydrometer for now until I can afford to buy the refractometer for salinity, a digital therm I keep on the sump, I have a calk, and alk kit all from api. I have and am using at the momment the Instant Ocean salt I bought the 200 gallon box rite away so I would not need to buy for a while after it is spent I am swiching over to the Reef crystals Instant Ocean instead I should have done this rite away i suppose, so now you know what I have and what I need oh I forgot reead my signiture it has all pretty much all my info there duh! i am using RODI as well I have a 50gph I store it in a Brute for now.

So any clubs local that would be willing to take me under their wing I would be greatful thank you all for taking the time to read my novel I mean story lol any imediate help would be great I am going to TFP rite after work to hook up with my supliment and I do plan on attending the frag swap tomorow hopefully to learn more and perhaps to purchase a nice but cheap frag I figure there frags are going to be a little cheapr than that fish place frags?? yes no? I wanted to start with a hammer or frog spwan coral maybe my clown would host it and I wanted some movement in the tank other than the alge I have growing on the rocks rite now prob from over feeding my litle guy.

Ok I am done thank you again let the support come flying in, lol by the way my name is Nate. Thanks again!!!

Sorry, I have been out of town since Friday. I too am sort of a newbie, and get a lot of my advice from my sister-in-law and reading lots of forums. I have foud that there is not as much stuff around here to purchase used or get togethers. I have heard that the Mason-Dixon club is a bit more active. As for Mag and phosphate kit, they will be important for when you have coral. We started out with a basic kit then just started adding different test kits as needed. We use Red Sea test kit (in the small box), but am looking to changing over to their new kit that TFP started carring.

I would love to give you some frags, but I am fighting bryopsis and don't want to introduce that to your tank.

Did you get any frags from the swap??? I have had very little luck with frog spawn and hammers. They always seem to blow their heads after two months. Drives me nuts! I have zoas, acans, palys, cany cane, feather duster, finger leather, favia, ricordia, and a blasto. They are slowly growing, but am adding more each frag swap. I can't affort colonies yet, so starting small.

As for a cycle, it you started out with all live stuff you would have only a slight cycle. That is a great way to start. I started with live sand and about 10 lbs of live rock. The rest was base rock. It took about a month to cycle. I am going to do the same thing with the 150 I will be setting up in March so it will be April till I can put things in it.

Sorry about loosing your job. When my husband and I started, he was unemployed so we pieced the tank together. We purchased the display tank and sump from VA, power heads and lights from sister-in-law, and purchased the pump, skimmer, rock and sand from TFP. Even though it was used, it was still costly. I purchased the 150 tank used, but once again from VA. We are going to transfer the fish and corals to the 150 along with the skimmer. We are purchasing the other pieces a little at a time. We love TFP coupons and use them all them time to get the more expensive pieces.

Would love to see your tank! My tank looks not the nicest because of the bryopsis, but if you want you can come and see it!

Well, ur above post is only 3 words short of a novel, sooooooo...

As a "club" we are very informal. No dues, etc. Our only requirements are that you participate in the discussions on this forum and that you attend the meetings when you can. If you cant make it to everyone, then its no big deal. So, if you are here asking questions, then you are part of the club. But a little advice: Keep ur posts specific. The above one is all over the place. If you stay specific, then everyone can answer your question.

As far as your question on additives, you need to read from the main forum under reef chemistry. You can use Ice melt disolved in RO water (magnesium sulfate to make a mag additive and calcium sulfate(i think) to make the calc additive) but you have to read about it, understand it and follow the directions! In a tank so young and with such a small amount of livestock, I'd bet its your salt that is lacking in calc..... thats why your number is a little low. But right now theres nothing in your tank thats going to deplete it like that. Test your freshly mixed salt water (for a water change) and if its low, then theres your problem.

And your ALK should be 9-12 NOT 14

READ READ and just when you think you know, use the search funtion and read more!

I have some cheap frags if you are interested. I have easy growing monti caps... they grow like crazy in my tank so they cant be that hard to keep. I can frag a toadstool leather , some shrooms, some zoas, etc. Lemme know if you wanna come up someday. Im usually off on thursdays and fridays.

The only other advice I have for you is dont make it more complicated than it is.
