November MARS Meeting

In Memoriam
Hello everyone,

This months meeting should be a must attend for anyone that ever had an interest in aragacrete rock. MARS member airinhere (Aaron) will be doing a cooking demonstration on how to create your own rock. There will be a 25 minute video presentation followed by a live presentation on how to create the mix and mold the rock. Then for about 10 brave people, you will be able to create your own rock. If you want to be one of the 10 people, Aaron suggests you bring or wear old clothes. I guess this gets pretty messy.

We will also be doing water testing and calibrating of refractometers, and temp probes.

I am sure that Paul will also have some wonderful items for the raffle table as well.

See you on Friday, Nov 16th at 7:00 PM at the Round Table pizza on Madison in Folsom.

Sounds like a great meeting. Thanks Aaron for the demonstration. I have always wanted to create my own rock, but never got as far as actually doing it. I would love to be one of the 10. Do we need to sign up, or will we "volunteer" at the meeting.

I am really looking forward to this. I have seen Aarons work and have been meaning to talk to him about the entire process so this is perfect!

How will the volunteer rock making work out? do we get to take it home at the end of the meeting? How does the drying and curing process work. I would love to be a volunteer as well but I don't know what is involved.

Aaron will mix all the ingredients. You will make the mold for your rock, with direction from Aaron, and then you get to take it home.

Aaron, if you want to fill in any gaps I am leaving out, please feel free to jump in on this.

Don't forget: The Club polls will be open at this month's meeting as well, so be sure to be there to do your part!

Aaron, so looking forward to this!... BTW, I have always wanted to ask: Can you mold the rock into ANY shape you want? I can think of some interesting 'themes' for a unique rock structure work. heh heh heh... ;)

Art comes in so many forms, why not with your reef too?

 Mike's next tank will have the theme of an ALL MALE REVUE

Thanks. I hope you all enjoy the presentation.

People who would like to make their own rocks will be able to sign up at the start of the meeting. However, if many people respond here on the boards, we will have enough for everyone and then some extra material at the meeting for those who don't have internet access.

Wear clothes you dont mind getting dirty. If anyone has styrofoam shipping boxes, we will need one per person who is going to be making their own rock. You just take the box home with your rock inside it and follow the directions for curing that I will provide in the lecture.

Sweet Jesus... Ya'll see what I have to deal with?!

Seriously though, can you sculpt the rock work any way you like? How cool would that be to sculpt something and have it grow coral/coralline all over it. Designer series reefs! I am sure some affluent folks would pay good money for something unique like that to liven up what could have been just another 'ordinary' reef.

Think dentist offices with a large toothbrush rockwork, or a doctors office with something just as fitting... I see a business opportunity here folks!

So if we want to make rock... wear dirty clothes and bring a styrofoam box.
I'd like to try this. Is there anything else we need to have or bring???
Thanks in advance Aaron.
