November Meeting (& Pizza Party) Announcement

Yeah, I know....I'm just telling you what HIS experience was, coupled with his knowledge of water chemistry. You asked for notes from the meeting and that's what I gave you.

We're working on getting Dwayne's slides published. It's a monster file, but we should be able to get it on the website in the near future.

The thing I remember most was talking about phosphates feeding your undesireable algae while your macros, such as cheato, fail to thrive. Dwayne suggested looking into iron supps - if you have zero nitrate, but you still have phosphates, your macros may benefit from iron and then be able to outcompete the micros for phosphate uptake.

That's next on my list of things to investigate. :)

I've seen iron help when the macro is phosphate limited. Usually due to running phosban and yet there are still nitrates present. Almost a forced growth. I have to do that myself. Others too will actually add nitrates (gasp :eek1: ) if there are still phosphates and no nitrates. I haven't had any experience myself with the phosphates and no nitrates.

Get those files up, isn't that why you make the big bucks? :D

Cool! So, uh....I guess I'll wait and see what you find out then. I mean, no sense in both of us researching, right? ;)

But yeah, like I said, I'm in that zero nitrates/zero phosphates showing up, but I still have some tufts of algae here and there, and my chaeto is falling apart. Just checked it last night after I trimmed it all the way back to just a softball or so size bunch, and even it is starting to deteriorate on me. Stuff used to grow great, had all kinds of pods and sponges in it, even sold some at the last frag swap...now it's just dissolving on me.

It may be decaying at just a slow enough rate to be feeding the nucience algae but not enough to show on your tests.

Which is why I tried to trim it way back and get rid of all the decaying parts that were releasing bad stuff back into my tank. I kept just a portion that looked like it was in good shape, but now less than a week later and it's breaking down some too. May have to drop it in my 10g just to preserve what little I have left. Lord knows there's enough nutrients in there for it to survive on.

I think I'd do that and watch for the nitrates to just get a little tiny tiny amount and then bring it back. Have you tried the iron?

They should be up this evening or tomorrow. I'll keep ya posted!

Great Job Dwayne and all

Great Job Dwayne and all

I just want to offer my thanks to Dwayne for his presentation and to MS Liaison Lisa Brown and all others who made it happen. Also, thanks go out to the MS owners who cut Dwayne loose on Saturday AM to come to our meeting!

I've never seen so much reef material covered in such a practical and succinct way. I really appreciated his candor and the practical experience he shared.

Thanks again,

Jim Craig
