are they ok for reef tanks or not? or is it like a do what you want type thing?

i just saw a angel fish thread and most of the tanks were
reeftanks with all types of coral in it...

yet my lfs wont sell me any angel fish bc i have some mushrooms, hammers, polyps, and some ric's.....

what up with that.?

Angels are reef safe with caution due to them being nippy to some corals, I think its amazing your LFS wont sell you one knowing what you have in your tank, kudos to them

Some angels are definitely not reef safe .. some angels are "with caution" ... many/most angels are tough to keep and need a 100+ gallon tank.

I have a dwarf flame and other then being a bit of a tail chaser (like most of us guys) he's been nothing but a stunning pleasure. Fire red with black and blue highlights.

But like all other things in this hobby it's 6 of one and half dozen of an other.

Maybe I lucked out...for once;)

I probably have to disagree, I started out with a cherub angel. He's done just great in my 75 gallon for about 8 months now. He's also just about doubled in size. I would emphasize starting out with a type of pygmy angel. They're usually not so bad aobut nipping LPS coral and not so aggressive

I have a coral beauty and he does not pick on anything in my reef, at least that I can tell. I don't starve my tank, so he has plent of non-coral food to eat anyway.

Dwarf Angels are a different category that std large Angels .. like comparing apples & oranges.

Yup!

Why dwarfs are always the safer bet for sure.

The answer will vary with the species of angel and types of corals. The Genicanthus angels are plankton pickers and safe with any corals. Any of other angels are a bit more variable, with nice fleshy polyped type corals and shrooms being high on the hit list as tasty morsels for those that are inclined to pick.

Genicanthus are the only so-called "guaranteed" reef-safe angels. The pygmy-pygmy angels come in second, though still with caution. The others are a hit-miss, I guess.

I've found that it depends on the particular fish. I've had 4-5 Lemon Angels and 2 Coral Beauties in my tank (swapping out hoping to find that non-picker) and all have been coral pickers. My friend had a Coral Beauty that was perfectly fine in her reef tank. I eventually gave up on having Angels in my tank. Although they're beautiful, I don't want to risk it.

Hit or miss with just about all types of angels. I have had success with coral beauty, flame, bi-color, and keyhole. I had a majestic that nipped but didnt do much dammage. I installed an atomatic fish feeder, and the nipping ceased. But I did read an interesting thread about pollup extension with angels in the tank. Most agreed that they did not have alot of PE with angels in the tank. If you research some of the tank of the month articles, there is one lady that has 3-4 angels in an SPS dominate tank. HTH

I've tried with several, but, pretty as they are, they are essentially coral predators. Nip and move on is what they do in the wild reef, and they may even have some benefit to the corals---but unfortunately, when they reach the wall on your tank, they reverse direction and go back over the same territory, hundreds of times a day. If you have a nipper, which you likely will, sooner or later in its life, you'll have a problem.

I guess thats one of the reasons i did not get an angel, they may or may not nip at corals, I just didnt want to roll the dice and take the chance. And I would stick with that LFS, any store that wont sell you something for the sake of a sale is one to stick with for sure.
