Nudibranch

I just bought a nudibranch that is purple and has yellow bumps on it. Very good looking but very bright so i predict it is very toxic. I am worried if he dies he will kill the entire tank with him. Do you suggest i take him back to the store and if not what shoudl i put in the tank to ensure he is being fed and will continue to survive ?

I don't know of any that are purple and yellow that you are likely to be able to keep in the long term. If it's a dorid nudibranch, it will almost certainly only eat one species of sponge (which probably isn't growing in your tank) and if it's a Phyllidia/Phyllidiella species, it could potentially be dangerous for you tank inhabitants. Does it have a gill on the back, or just bumps? Either way, it's very likely to starve in your tank, as the prettiest nudibranchs are some of the poorest choices for aquarists.

Cheers,

Don

Yup its a Phylidia Varicosa. I am worried it will wipe out my tank. At this point i am thinking my best bet is to take it back to the store or something. Any advice?

I'd take it back. They can release some bad stuff if they are injured or stressed (and maybe if they aren't). There's a lot of anecdotal info about this species on the seaslugforum, but it's scattered among several posts. You may have to search for it. (Read about people becoming sickened by breathing the fumes coming from the aquarium...)

I kept one in a tank for several months without anything keeling over, but I wouldn't necessarily risk it if I were you.

Cheers,

Don
