Nurce Question

Hi All,

Just a couple of quick questions. I have a nurce that has a small algae problem. It takes awhile, but eventually algae starts growing and I have to clean it out.
All water is RO/DI with new cartridges and membraine. I clean the nurce with papertowels and vinegar. I cover the nurce with a dark colored towel to slow down the growth.
My question is, where are the algae spores coming from? What do you guys that have a nurce use to clean and keep out the algae growth?

TIA

No Don, they don't make them anymore. Actually, the one I have is homemade.
CeeGee, a Nurce is a square acrylic bos (about 5 gal) that uses a siphon to replace evaporated water. I fill the Nurce about twice a week, and do not have to worry about water levels.

The Nurce is an acrylic box that you fill with your top-off water and any additives you use. It works on a siphon principle and uses no electricity. I had one a few years ago, but sold everything. I wish they were still in business, as I thought it was a great product.

The algae spores can diffuse back up the line that lets water out of the reservoir.

If you use kalk in your Nurce, algae won't grow (at least it doesn't in mine).

Don,

I think that is the case. I have a calcium reactor on my system. Do you think adding a little (very little) kalk to the topoff water would retard the algae growth and not affect the alk/calcium?

David,

I'll see if I still have the plans.

David,

Here is the pdf file I built mine from. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I don't run a calcium reactor, so I am not sure. Since I always run a saturated calcium solution, I don't know what the minimal amount of kalk to prevent algae growth would be. since I suspect it is the elevated pH that prevents the algae growth, you would probably need to get close to a saturated solution.

If you ran kalk and a reactor, both, I suspect you would be able to turn your reactor bubble rate down a bit. I know there are a number of people on the board who run both, and could better advise you.
