O. japonicus seem to swim more than most stomatopods. I assume this has to do with their living at depth on open muddy bottoms. This female was cruising across her tank.
Thats a real nice pic Roy..Mine dose not swim as much.then again mine lives in a 20 gal with about 10-15 gal in it. its a sump/fuge..OT are the japonicus a bit more rambunctious my O scyllarus was not as active
Awesome photograph! To get the whole Mantis in focus while it's swimming is not an easy task. First time my late Peacock took a swim in her tank, I was in awe. It kind of looked like she was "flying" in the water. Thanks for sharing and teaching us so much Dr. Roy.
this would be a good time, if someone is willing, to point out how to "sex" a mantis shrimp. i've read that behind the third pair of walking legs, there should either be two little twigs (male) or two bumps (female). i can never make out anything. is it clear to everyone that this is female?
