Observation on snail survival.

Everyone has now moved out of my 55gal into the new 125. Few casualties in the move but as I was collecting snails I noticed that almost all of the snail's I have left are astreas.

Astreas have been criticized for their poor survival rate but many of these snails have been in my tank for a long time. I also have several trochus.

It is worth mentioning that the 55 system was in pretty poor shape when I broke it down. I was afraid to test the water.

Of the three main species that I use the survivors are about:

10% Trochus
90% Astrea
0% Turbo:(

ORLY ?

Good to know ;)

I find that the life span of snails is about 1-18 months in most tanks or less. It comes down to a lack of food once things are cleaned up... they simply just starve off, or become food (and homes) for other members in the tank. ALTHOUGH, I do have a few monster shells from a few rare snails that have lived for quite a few years in my tanks..... so I guess that arguement about lack of food is Bunk.
