Oceanic BC29

I picked up an Oceanic 29 gallon biocube and stand this weekend. It was a great deal and I couldn't pass it up. Of course, I wasn't planning on another tank, so now I'm enjoying the thinking and planning part of my new nano reef. I was thinking of doing a shroom dominated softy reef with mixed zoos, and maybe an open brain. I figure the two 36W PC tht come with the setup should be able to handle that.

Are there any good mods for this cube? I was also thinking on getting one of the sapphire skimmers that are supposedly built to fit the BC29, anyone have one of these skimmers? Are they any good?

This is some good stuff =). i think im going to slowly get rid of my bioballs and try some of these mods. i love my bio cube.

Scuba Josh - the light upgrade is a retrofit kit that you can buy at nanocustoms.com or nanotuners.com. It is desgined to fit into the existing canopy that comes with the BC29.

REFDUDE- Will I needto cut new holes for new fans with the 4.36 or do the stock fans suffice?
How are 4.36 better than 2.36 that it came with? Will I be able to handle SPSs and keep thier color?

Thanks for your help!!!!!!

ScubaJosh,

You won't have too cut new holes for the replacement fans. The Nanotuners kit I got was the 4.36 upgrade which doubles the lighting to 144w but you can't keep SPS. You'll need a few hours and a soldering iron to install the kit.

cloob- Not to sound like a real dummy, but what is the point or advantage of doubling the light ouput if I can't keep different corals than I currently keep?

You'll be able to keep more soft corals than you can with the current lighting in the stock hood. I've seen a huge takeoff in growth on my soft corals since I added my upgrade in December. I've heard of people placing SPS corals towards the top of their tanks with the 144 w lighting but it is only enough lighting to maintain the SPS but no real growth.

cloob- after the upgrade did you move all corals down to the bottom, or add the new light 1 hour at a time?
How long did it take to put in the new system (w/ or w/o fans)? Can I do it in one night? The web site says 2 hours.

I only had two soft corals at the time I installed the lighting upgrade. zoa, and green toadstool. You have to do all the new lighting at once since you have to add ballasts. It took me around 4 hours to do the whole install with lightin/fans since I'm no electrician.

The 4.36 upgrade is great for keeping LPS as well as softies, zoos, etc. There are 2 types of fans in the upgrade, and I suggest getting the variable speed ones for an additional $10 or so. They are louder, but if turned down one level are almost as quiet as the stock fans. HTH
