Oceanic Salt ?

Anyone in the area use Oceanic Salt any more . I was using it , and loved the the stuff , but it seems a lot of people had problems with it , and now you don't see it around here anymore .

Shawn , I had to go to TM Pro. , but I can't stand the price , so I went to IO RC , but I don't like the brown scum you get when you mix it up . What do youhave to pay , for a 200 gal. bucket ?

I have heard everyone say that but i dont notice it . It may be due to the fact that i use a black barrel and i rinse it out every 2-3 times i mix anyway.I just know that my LPS love it and my SPS are just as happy if not happier since i switched to it.IMO even if I saw the film of stuff in the barrel I would feel pretty safe with using it still just from the way everything is happy in the tank.

Ted - This is just my opinion but from my experience and working with friends tanks that ran different salt I would not use anything but Instant Ocean. RC is probably just as good but I know for a fact that my corals do well with Instant Ocean so I will probably never switch unless they change things.

I mix the IO RC to 1.025. The Magnesium never seems to be high enough in the fresh mix??? Can I add Mag to the freshly mixed salt to raise the mag before I do water changes?? I have been thinking about doing this.

It seems I am constantly chasing my Mag. I'd be interested to know what the regular IO has for Mag when freshly mixed?? Emmett??

Emmett , Thank you for your input . I know how well it is working for you . You have had great success with your tank , but I think that is due to your hard work , and dedication . I'm not saying it is bad salt , I just don't like the brown scum in the mixing vat . It leaves a hard brown / tan coating in the barrel ,on the mixing pump , and anything else in the mixing barrel . I will take some pics Tomorrow if I get a chance . Ted

i use RC and get the scum as well but i put a HOB filter in my mixing tank and it takes care of the scum then i just clean out the filter every month or so.

Aaron - you can add your mag to the water i usually let it sit a day before i use it. I do this for my system to keep my mag up. it's alot easier then having to change your dosing on your tank after each water change. You can also do it for the cal and alk if there not high enough.

I don't worry about the brown scum, I have the same mixing tank for 3 years never a cleaning. It's all brown no worries :) Yeah I'm real dedicated??? J/K I call me lazy

Killerbee, Thanks!!

So to clarify, I normally mix 50 gallons in my barrel.

should I mix the salt, let it circulate for a couple days THEN add the Mag and let sit again? Or can I add the Mag with the salt and let the whole thing circulate a couple days?

Thanks,
Aaron

Aaron be careful raising your mag you don't want to do it too quick in the tank. I believe you can add the mag right away to the mixing tub but I could be wrong

i usually add the salt let it sit a day and then test the parameters so i know what needs to be added and how much.
I then go on bulk reef supply and use there calculators on there so i know how much i need to add of each.

Cool deal. I have been struggling keeping Mag up above 1250 but I realized the problem. Every time I get it up to over 1300 is usually when I do a water change and it drops! I couldn't figure out why till I tested some of my freshly mixed RC salt and discovered the mag was only 1200 at 1.025!?!? So each time I got my mag close, it would drop again after my weekly 20-30 gallon water changes :(

Thanks for the help guys!
