Oceanic Salt

is there a easy way to drop the ALK? Stu is doing a water change but the way we have it setup we are looking at 45 gallons Max on his 225. I don't think that is going to drop it fast enough.

Water changes is the only safe way.
I think you can use acid, not sure how much tho.

No it wont preciptate out to a safe level @ Prater.

I have a question.. It's been about two week since he did a water change.. How fast should the Dkh work its way out of the tank? Could the CA reactor be adding way to much, causing this issue.

I use Coralife exclusively however its usually low in ALK. We test each 60 gallon batch but it usually needs about 2 tsp of Randy's part 1 per 5 gallons to bring the ALK up to 10 DKH.

I got some good advice yesterday. All salt has settling during the shipping process so it will not test consitant throughout the bucket. I was told turn it upside down and shake the best you can. Then sit it on its side and roll it back in forth. This will make your salt more consistant regardless of what brand you use.

Makes sense.

Coralife makes this easy. Each bucket contains three individual resealable bags.

Shaking a bag would be much easier.

Working in lean driven manufacturing though, I could recommend a quick cost savings for their company. LOL.

One other thing to add. Debating salts could go on forever, but based off the intial tests of the Oceanic, I cannot see why I would switch to a different brand. We will see what the long term effects are, but they would not be able to sell it if it was all that bad. I used Instant Ocean for years, and it was fine, but never really had the calcium I needed. I will say this, Oceanic is extremely soluable, dissolves very quickly and easily. That is nice.

Right now , my only consern is the phosphates, and we will see how that goes.

I like the individual resealable bags, myself.. way better I fill my drum up to 45 gallons and dump the whole bag in.. usually puts me about 1.025.. I'm lazy :D

Kinda like cigarettes huh.

Company's could and would sell their products it even if it was the most deplorable mixture on the face of the earth. Just think about how many bottles of "quality additives" are sold within our hobby daily... "The label on the bottle says its all good, so it must be good right?" ... and people spend good money on this junk.

The deciding factors for my salt choice was availability and price. Coralife and IO especially are easily accessible almost anywhere in the continental US. Locally I consistently find the best deal with Coralife so thats the salt I use.

i was using Oceanic salts for awhile, but i just got too much algae from using it. my buckets would even get a build-up in them. I have since switched and everything seems to be fine now.
the oceanic salt was great for my corals but i hated dealing with the algae

If it is price and availability, DFS is tough to beat on Oceanic, Instant Ocean, Reef Crystal, or Coralife.

Speaking of that, I will be wanting to do a group buy on salt from DFS in the next 2 months. I am down to 1 1/2 buckets.

Cant beat dfs on a group buy, shipping is 17 bucks regardless of quantity. When spread it out over several buckets, and thier low cost, it is tough to beat.

Lon, when you put it that way, it makes perfect sense.

Logik, I am just saying, there are a lot of reefers out their that use all these brands and have success. It really just comes down to personal experience and although my experience with Oceanic is short, it has been positive. Until it goes negative, I will not be switching.

Mike,

Google the Aqua Ecolizer, or Marc Weiss products....

Let me know what you turn up.

Zero issues with this thinking.

Just keep in mind, problems do occur, frequently, when switching brands of salt.

I definately have to keep this in mind, especially since I have 400 gallons of Oceanic Saltwater in my aquarium. :eek2:
