OceanPure vs. Oceanic

Any new news on Ocean Pure? Does anyone know any Chicago area stores that have it, or any good online sites that sell the large buckets but don't charge a fortune for shipping? Marinedepot has 50g bags but that isn't very practical for a 305g system, and customaquatics sells it for $20 a bucket but charges $35+ for shipping (not that it's a horrible total price, it's just that I have trouble justifying spending more on shipping than on the item itself).

I haven't found anyone on the East coast that carries that salt. I will say that I purchased a very large amount from customaquatics and if you order enough that your shipping exceeds $150, you get a discount and you can order the boxes which contain 4 - 50 lb bags. That should be more than enough to do a water change on your tank.

Since I changed over, I have seen a great return both on stability and the overall growth of my corals. Its worth paying the shipping - I mean if you look at the average 50 lb bucket or bag of salt, you pay the equivalent.

I'm kinda leaning towards doing that too. I'm still considering other brands but the top contenders for me right now are OceanPure and Tropic Marin. Both are about the same price ($60 shipped for OP, $65 for TM) and seem to be liked by people who use them.

The only "problem" with OceanPure is that I'm having a difficult time being able to justify spending $70 on shipping for $50 worth of product. It's not so much the $60 total cost because I'd be paying that for TM anyways, it's just paying more for shipping than the product itself doesn't feel right to me.

Unfortunately I have only found a few other websites that sell OceanPure salt and they are even more expensive by quite a significant margin :(

Does anyone else have any comments? Do you think it's worth it?

I feel that The positives that I gained from Oceanpure is far worth the Price of the Salt... Its a very stable and good mix... I plan on using this salt from here on out as long as It stays reasonably priced and the Chemical makeup stays the same.. But I dont see why ViaAqua would change something that it seems everyone likes... Id say Order yourself enough to last you a year and call it good... Cheaper that way and you only have to pay the shipping once a year... You can also see if someone can Airfreight it to you.. Might be cheaper that way as well..

I did estimates at customaquatic for 1, 2, 3 and 4 boxes and getting 2 boxes at a time was cheaper, at least to my zip code. It would be cheaper to place 2 orders of 2 boxes than a single order of 4 boxes, but I might call them up tomorrow and see if they have other shipping methods or deals that might reduce the cost a little.

I would need 1400g+ of salt mix to last me a year which is too big a 'risk' for me right now, I mean that's a heck of a lot of salt to be stuck with if I didn't like it for some reason. 400g at a time isn't really a bad deal, I just want to be certain it's the right choice.

In case anyone was wondering, here are some test results from one of my second 35-40g batch of Ocean Pure.

Temp: About 70f (via AC Jr and cup, mixing tank isn't heated yet)
Salinity: 1.026 (mixed about 18 hours with 750gph pump)
PH: Not tested yet
ALK: Not tested yet
Ca: About 420-440 (Salifert)
Mg: About 1250-1350 (Salifert)

This is my first time using test kits so I gave a wider range to allow for any errors on my part. I will test again once I have my tank filled. I could not test pH or Alk yet as my AC Jr needs to be calibrated and my Seachem Marine Basic kit came with a broken vial that I'll need to replace. Still it looks good so far. It mixes with my water instantly and at 1.026 gives levels of roughly 430/1300 (give or take a little due to inexperience with test kits) which seems pretty good to me. It'll take me about a week to fill my tank up but I'll post some full results when it's full.

Here are my new results from that 35g batch.

1.025 (Refractometer)
Temp: About 77f (cheap glass thing)
PH: 8.1 - 8.2 (seachem)
ALK: 2.5 - 3.0 meq/L (seachem)
Calcium: 410 - 430 (Salifert)
Mag: 1230 - 1260 (Salifert)

Can't really complain about that. Mixes instantly for me with no residue or anything. Can't compare it to anything since it's the only salt I've used but it seems pretty good to me.

sorry to dig up an old thread but.

I'm currently using Ocean Pure Pro salt and finding the Kh around 5 at best. Anyone else seeing that?

Is there any one in the Florida area that carries this salt?

As of right now, I'm paying 59 dollars at the local store for red sea pro which I'm not to impressed with at the moment.

Do you think this salt is comparable with Tropic Marin pro?

I checked out CustomAquatics.com and I'm getting a shipping quote of 64 dollars, 88 for the total price which obviously is more than anyone would want to pay for salt.

I have a question.... I use Ocean Pure and I love it so far, But Reefcam, was this the plain OceanPure or OceanPure Pro? on is an advanced salt with higher calcium and some other minerals.

I would like to know, because I'm thinking about moving up to the OceanPure Pro.

thanks

Lets bring this back!

I have been using Reef Crystals but continuously get low Mag and Low Alk. Not happy. Tested a batch yesterday morning and Mag was at 1050ppm. When I do water changes is fights against the tank. It is not what they say it should be on the bucket. I found Oceanpure today online and am thinking to explore it. How new is the stuff?

I service aquariums so need a regular supply of it. It is cheap enough but I can't find it anywhere online. Marine Depot has it but only the Sea Salt.

NOTE! We must all specify, Oceanpure now has Sea Salt and Pro Reef Salt. The Pro Reef has added Mag and Calc and is advertised as much more suitable for the reef tank. This si what I want to get as RC I have not had luck with and Coralife was not much better.
