Oceans Motions question

This a little question for all you reefers using an ocean motions and have this device plumbed underneath the tank
I have 2 of them plumbed undert the tank for my closed loop but had to take them out now a few times to clean them out. They seem to fail every time a few grains of sand come in the drum.
How do you guys avoid from sand coming into this device.
Thanks

Put a filter on the intake water. My OM4 is above my tank, but it's been running for 4 years now and I still haven't had to clean it!

I don't use the OM, but have seen sponge and socks used on the intake - either require maintenance, but nothing is maintenance free. I really like to use the sponges that come with the mag pumps - coarse enough that they don't plug up every few hours, but fine enough to get almost everything trapped that can cause damage.

When I ran a CL, I used a PVC T on the inlet with 1.5" strainers on each side. I would wrap filter floss around the strainers in long strips like wrapping a mummy and just take them off every week or so, trash them and put some new floss on.

now I have installed the device the right way up in the hope the sand would actualy be able to fall out of the device when ever a pumps shuts down (pumps are set on timers) but still this is now the second time this week one of the devices fails making it make a loud clicking noise as the drum just stop rotating but the motor tries to force it round.
I have contact Paul from OM but am not sure if he is still active?
Does anyone know if they are still in business as this problem is getting out of hand having to clim under the tank almost every 4th day to clean out those things due to maybe only 4 grains of sand I find in them???
