Ocellaris or Percula Clown?

Greetings Everyone....
I need some opinions/reccomendations here :) I have a 12g NC that has been up and running now for 6 months with various soft corals that have been doing great ( i will post pics sometime). I dont currently have any fish but I REALLY want a clownfish. My LFS has the perculas for $20 and am very tempted to buy one! Im not sure if it is tank bred (prob. not) but is a percula just as easy/peaceful as a ocellaris clown? I know the color pattern is different which I dont mind, I just need to know what to get. My LFS ONLY has perculas...let me know what your thoughts are. Thank you in advance for your help!
 
Perculas are just as peaceful. Personally, I like perculas much more than ocellaris. I just added a pair to my tank and I love them. :D
 
I actually talked to a clown breeder this weekend. He was telling me about how great tank bread clowns are because they resist parasites and diesese better than wild caught.

I had a friend who told me his ocellaris was the tank bully, I guess every fish has their own personallity.

If you can get tank raised go that route otherwise I see no problems with a perc.
 
If the perc. at my LFS has been in the tanks for a good amount of time, do you think that it will be as easy to feed as the ocellaris? If it is not tank bred, do you think it is still a good choice? Thanks for your help!
 
It's really a matter of personal preference. The Percula I bought eat mysis I feed them, but I have no idea whether they are tank bred or wild caught. Ask someone who works at the LFS to feed them and see if they eat.
 
Will do :) Thanks for the help! If I just get one percula later todayand see hw it goes with him in my tank (just him as the fish) for a few weeks than get a goby, you think he will be fine? Any sugesstions? How often do you feed-do you think once every other day is enough (a varied diet)? :)
 
Yes, you can get a goby in a few weeks. :) I feed mysis everyday. I'm going to switch up their diet some and maybe add some flake and brine.

Just make sure you feed the clown around the same time everyday. They are very time aware.
 
Excellent, I will pick one up later today :) Yeah-now I am very excited! Any other sugesstions or tips to keeping perculas that you want to add? I want them to have great success in my tank. Thank you!
 
I actually just did a similar thing to what you are doing in adding clowns. I actually just added two to my 10 month old nano with just soft corals and easy stuff in there. I have had a neon goby in there for about 4 months by himself and have been searching for a pair of clowns, specifally a black and white perc and a regular orange false perc. Well, I found them locally and added them in over the weekend. They are both tank bred and very active. Already the black one is the female and is establishing dominance over the orange one. I really don't care if they breed (although that would be nice). I just want them to live together and not try and kill one another. They did come from the same tank so they already had some sort of pecking order worked out when I bought them. Personally the percs are much more colorful and prettier to me than any ocellaris, but thats a personal preference.

Float them for about 15 minutes to get the temp right, get a plastic container, pour the fish and about half of the water into the plastic container. Add your water until it fills up, wait 5 minutes, empty half the water and add more of your tank water, keep doing this for half an hour.

One of those deep square tupperware containers works best (make sure it's new).
 
Ok..what about just floating the bag for 15 minutes, then every 5 minutes adding 1/2 cup of water to the bag untill full, dumping out half and doing that again. Then net the fish into the tank. Does that work too?
 
Yep, i know but thanks for the tip :) Anything else? How long do you wait after hes aclimated to feed him? If hes coming from a LFS should I have all lights out or that wont matter? Right now, my tank light is on...he will be home soon (my mom is picking him up)...thanks!
 
He should be fine, if he looks stressed when he's in the tank (excessive hiding, labored breathing, odd swimming pattern) then turn off the light for the rest of the day (I did that with my Blue Assesor).

You can try to feed him today but if he doesn't eat to start with don't overfeed.

What do you plan on feeding him? My clown liked everything but LOVED frozen mysis. Just got rid of my clown yesterday for a Flame Angel, Clarki Clowns don't belong in nano's :)

I plan on feeding my clownfish a varied diet consisting of:
Frozen Mysis
Freeze Dried Brine
Prime Reef Flake

I plan on feeding once every other day or every day..whichever works for me. I will probably feed each night if possible.

Are the foods I will be feeding seem ok? Let me know your ideas, please. :)
