Ocellaris stopped eating... help...

So I've had a 2" Ocellaris for a few weeks.

He didn't eat the first day or two. Then on began taking a couple of frozen (PE brand) mysis shrimp daily. (I thaw them beforehand and also chop the heads off since my fish have tended to spit out the heads anyway).

He was fine for a couple weeks. Even anxiously swimming up to my fingers. In sharp contrast to my cowfish (separate tank, only 1.5" long), this clown would never eat more than a few shrimp.

Then a few days ago he stopped taking the mysis. He hardly seems interested in it, but will eventually swim over, put it in his mouth and spit it out immediately. I've tried finely chopped table shrimp, flake food, frozen green algae, and nori (just cause i had some). I've also tried the mysis with selcon.

Doesn't look sick apart from the fact that he's a little more shy than before. If anything he seems focused on "hosting" the Tunze skimmer... and isn't exploring as much. Any thoughts?

37g tank is 8 weeks old.

~25lb of live rock
bare bottom
1 large GSP colony
3 snails
coraline growing steadily

Tunze 9005 skimmer
Tunze 3166 mech filter
Tunze Osmolator ATO
Tunze 6055 alternating on lowest setting
Viper 150W HQI, 14K

Ammonia & NO2: 0 ppm (Salifert)
pH: 8.3 (Salifert)
Alk: 8.2 dKH (LaMotte)
Ca: 273 ppm (LaMotte) -- i know this is low
Dissolved O2: 8 (forget the units -- Salifert)

Have you tried enriched brine? It's quite a bit smaller. I know when I first got my Percs, I had to shave the cubes to get them to eat. I did that for close to a month before they started eating normally.

thanks for the suggestion...

i have been cutting the mysis down (no head, just half a body) and no luck yet...

i just noticed something interesting -- a clear string trailing him -- could it be that he has a stomach bug of some sort?

I don't know anything about parasites and such. You might check out the disease forum.

this one's wild caught...

update: i acclimated him to a quarantine tank -- and he's doing great. seems more active. going to try feeding this morning. wish me luck.

Have you tried cyclopeeze? I used this to get my clowns eating when they were babies, and they've loved it ever since... plus I've never seen any other fish that won't gobble it up.

I've never used anything but the frozen cubes, both actual Cyclop-eeze and other brands' "cyclops" - I think it's kind of like real fishing, the brighter colors are more attractive, which is why I prefer the cyclop-eeze.

If you are in a must-feed situation which it sounds like you are, I would recommend whatever your LFS has! Good Luck!

So he's taking some cyclopeeze... Not very vigorously, which means he's missing 90% of them... I guess I won't stress to hard since he's the only fish in the tank and there's an established filter (LR) in place... No sign of Ammonia after 5 days like this... I'll just hope he gets enough protein to stay well. He still looks healthy...

Good to hear - one of the great things about cyclo-peeze is that it stays suspended in the water column, almost indefinately with the right flow - do you have a powerhead that you can run to keep them moving while you leave the filter off for a while? the moving food may entice him further.

You can try "live" brine shrimp with some garlic extract (kent & seachem makes them). My clowns go crazy !!

the tank has a couple of tunze streams with a multi-controller. as you probably know, once in "feed mode" these pulse every few seconds to keep critters from crawling into the openings. so there seems to be just the right amount of movement to keep the food suspended.

yes - after 6 days, he's really going for the cyclopeeze. wondering if i should try some golden pearls or something like that... he's not a small clown (2")...

thanks so much -- i think you all helped me save him!
