Can't take orders yet, as I haven't heard about selection/pricing for a final answer. I called on the cell phone again a few days ago, and he was still out of town (Some other guy had his cell). SO, I sent him an email and are waiting to get it back... As soon as I get a reply, I will post it here, as well as an order thread. I would be happy to let Cobraz post it at BRS as well..

After Actions Report of Barrys Visit

After Actions Report of Barrys Visit

Hey guys, this was a very informative meet. I will share my notes with you when I get them ready to go..... We saw many new faces, some of whom we have heard from thru RC and others who have not. We had two join up, hope to hear from Jeremy Ferris and Matt Cosgrove soon on RC and see them at future meets soon.

Another visitor was David Basti from UMO... hope to hear more from him later as well... he is going to be doing research on diseases of fish etc soon at UMO ... hoping for a tour or a talk by him !

Robert Siegel ( a professor in the science dept) gave Mike Estee, Marko Melendy, Barry and I a nice tour of the marine facility at SMCC. We also had a very interesting conversation regarding invasive sps, restricted sps, diseases and much more...... could hold a meet or two on those subjects as well..... great minds think alike ;) not that I have one, I bout got Barry lost getting to a school I attended for 2 yrs LOL

Barry graciously donated us a $50 GC from ClamsDirect. Tickets are $1 ea or 7 for $5. drawing to be held on Oct 21.. I am guessing there will be a group buy in the near future ;) Proceeds will help us get going for next years speaker....

Great presentation ~ enjoyed listening to Barry and was relieved to hear that clams aren't as hard to keep as I once thought they were!

Cheers!

Excellent meeting. Barry did a good presentation. There were a lot of questions asked and it was an interesting topic. A couple of hours and then a tour, I left around 2:00 pm.
Here are my notes, missing alot of details.

Acclimation.
Clams should be put in tanks with specifications within this range.
Temp 75-82 Higher temps causes more stress that in the lower range.
PH 8.0 to 8.4
Salinity 1.022 to 1.025 ( Parts per thousand is actually a better
way to define salinity. We had a disscusion on accuracy of equipment and measurements.)
The drip method is the best way to acclimate fish,SPS and clams.
Clams are usually hardy enough modify this slightly to add a
1/2 cup of your tank water every hour. Do not put water from the bag into your tank ( a little as possible ) Barry sends acclimation instructions out with the clams. Acclimating clams to light is very important. Reducing photoperiod or placeing lower in tank and raising are some ways to
adjust light until the clams acclimate.
Metal halides work best for clams although customer have had success with clams under PC or T5 -n shallow tanks (12-14 inches)
Derasa, squamosa, and gigas require less light than crocea and maxima. They use Ushio 10 k bulbs in their holding tanks.
Clams from easy to keep to most difficult
Derasa almost bullet proof
Squaosa
Gigas
Crocea Difficult high light.
Maxima Much more difficult
Small clams (~2 inches have a high mortality rate)
4 inch clams are a lot easier to keep.
Ultras and electric are the most vibrant colors.
Pinched mantle is a problem that was very prevalent
a couple of years ago. Not as many lately.
Fresh water dip ~25 min in RO water at the same temp
as tank. Shake the clam to get water to the area infected.
This is stressful and may kill the clam. There is a chapter in the book that discusses clam troubles.
It is a protozoan that causes this. They have not indentified it yet.

Giant Clams in the sea and the Aquarium James Fatherree
is a new book out and has a lot of information on clams and their care in the aquarium.
( Denise and a couple of other people bought a copy. Since I already have homework maybe they will do a book report review)
Clams Direct follows up on clam purchases and uses this information
to improve the quality of the clams shipped. (IMO this is a practice that all companies should follow. The mortality rate of fish, corals and clams is to high)

Disclaimer
These are my notes and may not accurately represent the presentation.

This is biology not geology, It is not etched in stone and may change because of reasons to numerous to list.

Wanted to drop in and say, thanks for having me and I hope that I was able to answer some of your questions and there were a lot of them but I am glad that there were people that would ask them. :)

One correction that I just noticed on the previous post.

Crocea Difficult high light.

If I said that, I did not mean too. Croceas do require a large amount of light but they are one of the easiest to keep IME of keeping and shipping thousands of clams. Maximas are by far the hardest to keep!

Denice, Matt and Sue, enjoyed the GREAT lobster dinner and the conversation! Matt thanks for the brew prior to meeting the others for dinner!

ROFLMAO! Now that's funny right there ~ I don't care who you are!

Barry,

Thanks so much for coming to see us Mainah's. We enjoyed your presentation!

Now, please remember you said I could have the best looking, healthiest clam for $9.99 and you guaranteed it was bomb proof. Remember that? Oh dang, that was the Tridacnid Polyester!

Cheers!!

I think I will make sure my next vehicle has a GPS built in... sure will miss the scenic routes and side trips.. not to mention the exhilarating U-turns in intersections:D
