Octo Extreme Skimmer KO Club

Recently purchased a used Octopus Extreme 160 from another guy here. He told me it's still brand new and only had a few weeks of use. The skimmer is here and I have it running on my tank. It is very very loud. The motor rattles and the noise that is coming from the motor is like a strong-pitch wave of vibrations. Are your skimmers this loud? I am in the next room with a lock door and the noise still hurts my ear drums. The motor gives off vibration noise and air/water mix noise at the intake. I used rubber flats underneath the skimmer legs and makes no difference, so sump vibration is not the problem, it is the skimmer pump that's making all the noises. What can I do to quiet it down? Thanks in advance for anyone who can shine some lights on me.
Check to see if the impeller sit right in the pump. Did your skimmer tough your sump's side (It happened to me before)? If none of them above,it could be defected pump.

I just replaced original pinwheel with 2 layer mesh mod on my Extreme 200 . I set it skim wet and it pulls about 1/5 collection cup a day. I do skim wet because I feel like they are not good enough for my 150gallon(medium stock) Is it good to skim wet ? BTW one is good thing is it is really quiet compare to stock pinwheel I had. Will post picture and video later.

Ok, I have been fiddling with my 250 extreme's water lvl lately and I have noticed that when it is sitting at the recommended level, at the first bend, there is a ton of turbulence that pushes the bubbles out from the sidewall on one side of the skimmer. Its not a layer of bubbles breaking, its like a U shaped layer of bubbles and the other side is just turbulent water/bubbles. Is this normal or is there something I am doing wrong? If I increase the water level to halfway from first bend to the cup the turbulence goes away and I have a full layer of bubbles.

The skimmer sits at around 8 inches of water and I have the pipe b going straight out from skimmer body then the elbow piece shooting down to shoot the water over the bucket I have the skimmer in, there is no back pressure from the elbow since it has about an 1" drop to the sump water lvl. I have heard that I should get rid of all pipes and just have the output T open. Any comments?

I just bought a large pink pinwheel for my Octopus extreme 200 but i'm not sure if it's the large or small version. The pink pinwheel is about the same size with the original white pinwheel. Do I have the small or the large version? Please help.

Was just wondering if everyone was happy with there OctoX? I've been seeing alot for sale lately, is there somthing better out there for the price? I just bought the OctoX 200 for a 100g total volume system, but now I'm thinking I should have went with the 160. Maybe I should return it and find out what the new hype is that everyone else is jumping on? :p

I am very happy with my 200. I just switched the PPW out for a MW. The mesh is rocking. I haven't heard anything bad about the 200, but it seems like the 160 has had some issues.
Did you get the 2009 200?
I want to know how those perform.

I switched to a Cat2 internal from an Octo Extreme 300.....the new hype is the Hurricone line of skimmers. Alot of people got rid of their 160 or 200 Extreme and went to the Hurricone Cat1 internal.

I purchased the 2009 OctoX 200 with the modified neck, should be here Tuesday. Interested to see if its an improvement from my ASM G-2 skimmer.

Those Cat's do look like some mean skimmers, but a bit pricey for me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was just taking a look at the Vertex skimmer club thread. I like the long neck on those for some reason. Seems like Coralvue makes skimmers with short necks so you almost have to wet skim.

I would get a Cat 1 or 2 or 3 or whatever, but I only have a 75g.
I am trying to upgrade to a 125/150, but the OCTO extreme 200 would is solid, so is the MSX 200.
I'm pretty sure Charlie Davidson sold his Octo 200 for a Cat 1 and it was too much for his system.

Necco, the skimmer on it's way to your house is laughin at your ASM g-2. Not in the same class at all. Keep up posted on the 2009 200. I bet it is a little better than the one I have.

Vertex seems to be coming along nicely, and I agree about the necks. I think Vertex has solved a couple issues and now have a Gen 2 available. Let me know when you get it.

My octo extreme 200 does a great job on my 125. I had an
Aqua-C EV-180 and it does not even touch the octo IMO. I love this skimmer.

Marineduud, I think necco is just repeating hype he read elsewhere.
Vertex does make a good skimmer, but we know it can not compete with the 200extreme.

PPW vs Mesh Wheel

PPW vs Mesh Wheel

I ran the PPW for 3-4 weeks straight and had mediocre results. I switched back to the 38-40scfh MW and I have 1/2 collection cup full of nasty dark skimmate. I will upload some pics later.

As for the Vertex, I have never seen skimmate pics that made me want to buy one. Stocked with my 200 extreme.

:D

Help a newb please! I've been reading this thread, but missing some info for Extreme Newbies

Just got a 160 used w PPW.

Got it in the sump and I have a couple questions since there are no directions/ manuals (unless someone has a link)

- Do I just twist the OPEN/CLOSED tube to adjust the skimming height? I have mine on CLOSE now to get any skim height (it's not adjusted to my tank yet)

- What is the recommended depth by USERS? I saw 8-10" in the specs, and I have my shelf set at 9". Keep it or change it?

- Do I do anything with the air cap. or it just sits on top to quiet the hose?

Thanks!

Found answers by going all the way back to the beginning. Lots of reading.

I'm sitting at 9" and running wide open for now until it gets broken in some. I would think it should be pretty quick being used.

I had the PPW startup "rumble" but blowing into the silencer got it going. Running quiet now.
