Octopus skimmer pump frozen

Hello Albert, I recently bought an octopus DNW from aquacave. The pump has problems at start up. When I plug it in sometimes it will start but most of the time it just gets hot and the impellor does not spin. Is this a normal? I have soake the impellor in vinegar. It seems to me that the impellor does not have the flexibility as other impellors I have owned where the prop or needle wheel portion of the impeloor is free to spin independently of the magnet. The implellor will not have any flexibility to spin freely of the magnet to achieve the momentum necessary to start spinning. Please help with any suggestions to make this skimmer work.

Hi,
You should have approx. 320 degrees of free spin between the impeller and magnet assembly.
Please email us your invoice number at products@aquacave.com and we'll send out the replacement impeller together with the return tag for the old one.
I apologize about any inconvenience this might have caused.

Yes that is the problem, There is no free spin. It will "free spin" only with great force. I will email my Invoice number to you. Thanks for the faste reply and great customer service! I will always buy from Aquacave because I am confident that if I have a problem it gets solved quickly.

Hello Albert,
In addition to the impleller, there seems to be something wrong with the way the collection cup was made. At first it had a little crazing but now it is gettin worse as you can see from the pic. I worry that it will develop a leak. Can this be replaced as well? I can send it back to you along with the impleller.

Ok, great! If it doesnt leak, I dont care about the cracks but seems odd since its only 2 weeks old. Thanks for your help.

While waiting to hear back from Dave..........Please send the replacement impeller. If you already have done so, Thank you. I have not been able to run the skimmer in fear of burning out the pump with the defective impleller.

Pluvialis,
Replacement pump was shipped out on Thursday together with the return tag.
I decided to ship complete pump assembly because none of the impellers on 1000 model pumps have the same free spin as larger models.
Hopefully this will take care of the problem.

Wow , that sounds Great! Thanks for the dedicated support Albert. Is it an Ocean runner pump? Its not an OTP 1000? So the impeller has nothing wrong with it, the OTP 1000 impellers are made with no free spin? That was a strange idea for them to do that cos even most small powerheads have a free spin built into the impller. You really went above and beyond for me .

Hi Albert, I received the replacement pump. Unfortunately it behaves the same as the other OTP 1000. I think it was unwise for them to make the pump with no free spin on the impeller. So it seems like the ppump i have was not defective, thats just the way they are made. Thank you for trying to make things right. In light of all this I would like to keep an extra pump for back up. I forsee needing a backup pump if the prop stays frozen the pump could overheat. Please send an invoice to me for the pump. Thanks for the outstanding after sale support!

Hello Albert, I never received an invoice. Im not complaining but wanted to update everyone on my situation. Please send invoice unless this is intended to be a free pump. If that is the case then Aquacave really has a customer for life. I will encourage others to buy from Albert with confidence. Thanks for your kind support!!

Another update............ The original OTP1000 pump has melted and is causing electricity thru out the tank. Perhaps it was defective. I can not even remove the impeller because of the deformation caused by the pump heating up and melting. Thank you Albert for sending me a back up pump. Do you want me to send this overheated/melted pump back to you?

Hi,
Sorry about the trouble. Please send the pump back to us using the label that was originally provided.
We will send it to CoralVue so they can determine what caused the malfunction.

Another problem.......... the bulkhead that the outtake connects to is cracked. This part is on the skimmer body. How can I repair this? Im not sure how long it has been cracked. I thought the loss of water in my tank was caused by increased evaporation when the skimmer was running. Turns out that this thing has been leaking. My floor is warped under the tank. This thing has been a real lemon since day one. A disaster. The cracked collection cup, the frozen pump and now I discover a cracked bulkhead on the skimmer body. Does Coralvue offer any type of warranty? Im ready to put it all in a box. Im finished with trouble shooting this skimmer. You have been very helpful Albert and there is no need for you to apologize for troubles with this skimmer. So far the only positive thing about this skimmer is the vendor. Im so angry at myself, I have always went skimmerless with no problems with water quality. But we all love to upgrade our systems and this has me losing my hair over it. :(

I just talked to David at CoralVue about this issue.
He recommended that you send the skimmer back to him for repair.
Here is his shipping address:
Vue Technology

Please include copy of your original invoice for reference. You can send the first defective pump with the skimmer as well.
