Odd coral growth behavior

So my tank has been running for around 9 months. I have some zoas (as well as others) that act healthy and are spreading. The odd part is, they seem to be disappearing from the frag plug and only growing onto the rock work. Almost like a donut. I would have thought they would have remained on the plug, and spread to the rockwork.

What could cause this?

If my memory serves there has been some concern that certain ceramic plugs might leach some metals. If they are not growing or receding from the plugs but doing fine otherwise, the those plug must have a toxic effect. I have had zoos not take to plugs before. I have not seen the donuts you are seeing though.

Many coral species have the ability to move to more favorable conditions. I've always hated frag plugs anyway as they are difficult to hid and incorporate unless you've drilled holes into your rock. In addition ive seen that most softies that are banded down ot glued move away from that anyway. The zoas are doing you a favor. Thank them and ditch that plug.

Same thing here. Except that one Rasta that insists on staying right in the middle of the plug!!!!
