Odd fish

I picked up some rock from a friend's sump yesterday afternoon to finish out the 125. This morning, I was turning on the lights in the sump/fuge area, and noticed this 4-5" long fish that looked like a sticking pin (no bigger around). I've never seen one that long and skinny. My buddy has had the same fish for quite a while, and none are long and skinny. Sight unseen (I'll work on a picture), what does this sound like to you? It swam around a little, but more floated like a pipe fish. It had tiny eyes at one end of the 4-5" ling needle. That told me I wasn't seeing things;).

Here are some pics. Not the best, but the best I could do top down in livestock tubs;).

thats cool. why dont you catch it and put it in a class bowl or anything that you can see it from the side. and so you can get a good side pic.

neat, It looks like the silverfish sold at the world market I put in the mush... They were long, skinny and in varying sizes from very tiny to a little longer than yours.. Are they propigating in his tank? That is way cool....

We don't have any clue where it came from. He's been out checking his sump with a flashlight (with no luck). I had cleared most of the rock out of the fuge/sump area last weekend, and added about 70 pounds from his sump last night (before adding it to the 125). He does maintenance, but isn't aware of anyone he maintains tanks for having anything at all similar. If I can find it again, I'll pull it and try to get it into a small tank with sand and pods.

That is the weirdest looking thing, Gary ... Almost like one of those deep sea creatures that have adapted to total darkness. Good luck with the ID

That's Amazing, Nature could not be more weird than that! I wonder if it's valuable ? Secondaly hadn't you better put it back in with it's host? If not will it die ? Too cool to lose IMO.

Gonad eating buttfish. That's a life's aspiration:D.

I think that is what the fish is (Carapus acus). I had just gotten four cukes for a friend and kept them back there. I didn't know there were fishes that lived inside cukes, though. I'll have to drop one back in there so it has a warm and snuggly place to wriggle.

The info I've found only mentions that they can be cannibalistic, and live to hunt small shrimp and fishes. I'm trying to find an adult size on it. If it stays this small, it'd have to be pretty vicious to kill much of anything (it looks like a pod could choke it).

That is by far the funniest thread I have read on RC yet. Thanks for the laughs from the "gonad eating buttfish" lmao!
