Odd question

Ok.. my tanks been up and running... kinda.. for over a year..
Through out the year.. I've had many battles.. gha..dinos... cyano..red turf.. then another big gha outbreak..

The last time I had a big gha outbreak.. I had a tank crash as well.. ended up pulling all my rock.. 250# worth.. scrubbing every inch.. and then putting it back in the tank..

I didn't have any livestock besides a few hermits that survived the crash..


Now.. tank is thriving.. fish/coral/inverts doing great...
I resorted to chemiclean to rid the cyano... in turn... I got a huge...HUGE.. gha outbreak..

I got to the source of the issue.. Phos from leaching rocks (originally tank was started with tap...I was 100 percent noob.. the Phos in my tap water.... outrageous.. city water is fed by a reservoir..surrounded by farmer feilds)

I've finally got my Phos in check.. gha is dieing out pretty fast..

Now to my question...

I don't like filter socks (they kill alot of life and copepods) I have a mated pair of scooters blennys.. and 2 baby manderins in my fuge... pods are very important to me..

How can I filter out all the dead algae.. without a sock and destroying my pods..

Also.. I wanna syphon my DT and fuge somehow and scrub/syphon the gha out... I know pods live and breed well in cheato... do they also in gha?

I was thinking of making up a screen type catchall and syphon from the dt into the fuge... and catch the gha in the screens?

And I have a few media bags laying around.. I thought about using them as a filter sock on my drain.. to catch the algae.. but alow life to work it's way out?

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome..

Once pod your reef is opened after the holidays... I plan to order more pods.. just in case..

Don't worry about filtering out pods.. If it happens.. no big deal as they will replenish their population just fine..
There aren't too many free floating in the water so a filter sock really doesn't collect much but siphoning can.. They will live amongst the algae just like anywhere else..

But just do what you need to do and they will come back just fine if you actually do remove a bunch.. (not really likely though unless you are doing a massive cleaning)

A power head with a sponge filter on the inlet is a good way to filter out dead algae. It might catch some pods, but they should reproduce anyway if your tank is healthy.

I ended up syphoning the crap put of my gha...
Intentions were to do a little..onto a screen...then let the screen hang above my fuge..just bairly touching the water.. thinking they would find there way once algae started to dry...

Well that idea didn't work too well.. and there was alot of detritus in the gha..so I siphoned it onto a filterpad..on the screen... and siphoned 80 percent of the gha out of the tank.. there was alot I couldn't see... I got about 2lbs of gha (wet) out..

I put the algae into a bowl...there were tons of pods in there..

The whole time with the syphon and toothbrush.. my scooters were to right there with me... feasting lol

I think I will just drain this algae into a cup.. and toss all that water in my brine shrimp 1 gallon tank..

If I got that many pods out of that algae.... the 50 times that amount in my fuge is prolly holding millions and millions of them..

So I guess my concerns of a few were kinda Un necessary...

Honestly... I just don't like the thought of killing anything.. regardless how tiny

And there are a few patches I missed.. now that I've sat down to look at the tank..

I'll leave this for the lawnmower and scopas to chew at.. for now

That's a good idea... I think I will do that for the rest of the gha ad it falls apart..

Next challenge is going to be the fuge... I have 2 baby manderins down there... dozen little hermits and snails... and is about 20 days I will have a brood of baby banggai living down there
