Off the wall 29g...actually it's on the wall

Yes. Take a picture of you all standing in it too That is amazing! to imagine the thing could hold up so well. I wish you luck for the longhaul.
Thanks
Here's a few of pictures of it filled with the rock in it cycling. The rock had really nice pink and orange corraline grownig on it when I got it. Unfortunately it took me a day to get the rock in water and since then all of it has been dieing off.

that just looks so scary lol Hopefully it holds, it does look awesome though. If it does crash though you have to tell us though, incase someone else is going to do the same thing :D I really do like it though, it's a great idea!

Cool idea, Sure is a bold feat to atempt! :D

Thankfully, it looks like so far its holding :D
Good luck(and that was not sarcastic ;) )

Just a comment here. The only way that tanks is coming down is if those bolts shear and that is impossible. I think one of those bolts would have a shear weight of around 500 to a 1000 pounds and there is six of them. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you know the 2x4 framing is good and solid.

damn man you are insane, those pictures look nice, keep the good job,"not thinking about this i think i have a place i can put a tank like that :D "

Sorry for no updates, I've been out of town for a while and am going back out of town.
Its holding up just fine, added 20lbs of sand and it looks much better. Still messing around with the canopy and lighting.
I'll post more pictures when I come back.

ok i am one of your supporters but now i really think you got bowling balls as.... well you know the rest. you going out of town as well. thats brave. But im glad to see that its doing well and the design is awesome very original!!!

hey!

hey!

Hey, why do you have your sump out front? I thought you were putting "all the extra stuff" in the closet? It looses the aesthetics for me with the sump out like that. Hate to boo but hey. It's just an opinion after all.

What does your wife think?

Holy tank angels, :)
I started reading this thread not really knowing what you were trying to do, then wam their are pictures.
I have to say it looks awsome, don't however like the open stand and seeing the tank below.
But wow.
I have a question, what is the reason for a wall mount?
Isn't it hard to take care of being up so high, won't you have to use
a ladder to maintain it?

as a materials engineering undergrad i wondered if it would hold. the shear load on those bolts is gonna be more than enough. the ideas of triangles is a valid one however they shouldnt be a need for them as the stress is spread over the wall.

massive kahounas man, i love the idea and the solutions you have found all look slick. your setup is gonna dominate.

keep up the updates dude. :eek1:

I'd much rather have built it into the wall and used the closet to access the inside of the tank and sump, etc...rather than chance this structure holding up. I mean, the amount of money thrown down the toilet if it doesn't would be the same if you smashed the hole in the wall to make a cubby anyhow. I wish you the best of luck with it, but I can't believe you're not a tid bit nervous going to be at night or leaving the house with that thing sticking off the wall like that. I'm hoping it works out for you and all of us sound like cowards, instead of us all coming back and repeating, "I told you so." Keep us updated, man. And BEST OF LUCK!!! :)

suspended tank

may as well add my opinion too lol speaking as someone with over 20 years as a carpenter, for every foot you want to cantilever you should have a minimum of 2 feet behind. you say that on the other side are closets right? so what i would do is first remove the drywall so you have access to everything.run 2x6's on edge back through the wall the length of the closet and extending out the desired amount (should be approximately 28" of wood not visible on finished side) this will allow you to fasten the 2 outer 2x6's to at least 3 and possibly 4 studs (depending on layout direction) then props (legs) can be placed under them against the studs since they will be hidden by drywall. this way it will look like a shelf coming out of the wall and it will support the weight. hope that helps.

Build Strength

Build Strength

I hate to say it but you guys are worry worts. I have no doubt that his construction method will hold up over time. The wall studs aren't going anywhere and the bolts most definately won't shear under the load. The only place he could possibly have problems is with the angle iron breaking/bending at the joints. Hopefully he has good strong welds so it probably won't be an issue. One small thing that could provide more piece of mind would be to add another piece of angle iron (bed frame) diagonally on both sides from the front top the the rear bottom. Then it would be indestructable. I think it looks awesome and goes a long ways towards showing how much most of us overbuild in general. Good luck and bring on the photos.

Thanks for all the compliments and concerns from all you guys and your ideas too.

Nemo...No real reason for having it wall mounted and I can reach the bottom of the tank just standing.
Orangekoi...its just easier to have the sump below than to plumb both overflows through the wall. Behind the left side of the tank is the kitchen pantry and I dont want anything going through there.

I plan on enclosing and covering the sump and canopy with some type of plastic. I priced out acrylic, but its way too expensive. I read somewhere that plastic for shower surrond is cheap, so I'll have to look into it.

I'm home for a while and will post some more pictures later on in the week.
