Off Topic : fire wood in Almish country

gotta love saltwater.....
its that time of the year, and i don't remember the place down there where me and my dad got it a few years back , it was a nice hardwood with the bark still one it and burned real nice in the wood burner . if anyone knows where there is a mill down there to get it , please let me know

There is an Amish mill about a mile from my house. If you head south on rt58 and go through wellington, across rt224 and then about 2 miles later it forks. You want to stay to the right on 58 instead of going through the "S" turns to rt89. It is about a mile south of the fork on the left. Overall about 35-40 minutes from Elyria.

You can zoom in on satellite view to see the actual place. They always have stacks of cut offs and the bark cut off there. I have never stopped to ask how much any of it is since we don't have a woodburner.

Good luck!

man ,,,,,Goggle maps is the goods !!! i have to call the state to check if i can take fire wood over the county lines , i know the ash borer thing is still a big thing in moving wood from county to county ,,,, i will have to call on Tues and see what the restrictions are , if any

Thanks Kevin ,,,,,

Is that confirmed that the firewood is the reason the ash ended up in trouble or contributor or are the state county folks just taking a guess? Just curious.

This is a paragraph from an air force base(WPAFB) near Dayton:

"Penalties for moving firewood out of quarantined Ohio counties can be up to $4000 and up to $250,000 for moving firewood out of Ohio under the federal USDA quarantine, Dilworth said.

"These are serious penalties, but we recognize they are necessary to help slow the spread," she said, acknowledging additional base restrictions are likely if the Emerald Ash Borer is discovered in Greene County.

Given the scope and speed of infestation in the region, the best advice is to avoid movement of any firewood on or off base, or across any county lines, Dilworth added."

There is supposed to be updated info at this site, but it must be between updates right now.

If you dare, show up at this workshop on the EAB and ask that question.

From some of the wording used, my impression is that firewood is an "artificial" way the beetle spreads and we can control/regulate/legislate that. We have little or no control over the natural spread of the bug. Not helping it spread may make the difference if some effective treatment is developed.

Since it is already reported in Strongsville just north of me, I'm tempted to cut down all my ashes and replace them with Mountain ash which is the only immune species because it is not a "true" ash.

Some communities are cutting down all there Ash trees to provide a barrier to quaritine the infestation. And if it dont work they also just eliminated their liability when the tree do get eaten.

The City of Elyria has already began to cut some down , my neighbor where i used to live on the west side has a huge Ash in his front yard. (curb lawn) the city came out this summer and told him its slated for removal this fall , hes very happy to see it go.

Where is it going? They can't sell if for firewood.

why cant you use it as firewood? wood is wood right! i would rather see the bug eats its way thru a dead tree and get burned up. just think there busy they wont get into another tree as long as there left alone in the one there in. it looks good on paper!

thanx mike

If you have your own fireplace, yes, you can burn it, but you can't transport it across quarantine lines.

anyone looking to get rid of any wood in or around brunswick ill take it off your hands(no pine)

mike

You're on. In fact some is already cut down into long pieces but have to be cut some more to fit in a fireplace.

i just talked to the State about the transportation of fire wood , you can take it from any non-QT county into a QT county , you just cant do it from a QT county into a non-QT county , so all of the mills you can get it and bring it into Lorain County , you just cant take wood from Lorain county down to non- QT counties http://www.ohioagriculture.gov/eab/maps/eab-map-infestation.pdf ,,,

you cant take any from yellow counties to white counties , but you can go from white to yellow , and yellow to yellow on their color coded county outlines.
