*off topic*laid off

Check with Homeland Security, they've been hiring almost non stop since about a year after 9/11. They may be easier to get into than TSA.

And the nicest part of a Gov't job...?

PENSIONS!!! YAY!! lol sorry. Vesting yourself in a gov't job only takes a few years I believe (5-6 years?) and you make a percentage later on. Then when you retire, if you love the outdoors, become a FL state park ranger. That means x2 pensions :) Even better if you were in the military or something because you earn a pension for that as well :D

They call it double or triple dipping

Oh, and you can work that government job until the next hurricane comes around and tears down everyone's screen so they need screeners, in which case you can either quit and work full time screening, or just work part time because it'll be in such high demand that they'll be desperate for workers.

I know it's great that we havn't had any hurricanes that were really bad the past year or so **knock on wood**, but the side effect is that people who repair disaster-effected items are not in demand (FPL workers, screeners, window repair, etc.).

I'd like to know what government job will pay you benefits (even later on after only 5-6 yrs).

I've been in the military. My military time does count towards retirement with the post office but I still have a ways to go.

Any "double dippers" that I know off did a substantial time (20 yrs) in the military and then got out and were still young enough to do another 20 - 30 yrs in another field.

They've earned the right to double dip.

"Oh, and you can work that government job until the next hurricane "

While this is true to some extent... most of these layoffs are related to the subprime problem, and the housing market bubble that burst. Housing communities aren't going up at the rate of before.

I work for government and even though i made less when I came over from the private sector to the public .... the benefits ( health, time off, sick, holidays, job security ) was well worth the financial trade off. Vesting take 20 years.... i wish it was 6... lol

It would be good to look to see if the gov's are hiring in your area... but fyi you could be back out of a job next year if the new home tax proposal the morons in tallahassee came up with passes.

There are plenty of jobs in the hospitality business. There are tons of restaurant server/bartender positions available. If you get in the right place and treat your customers well you can earn a decent living until you find a career.

i make $500 a wk right now wich comes out to $12.50 per hr .... i understand i may need to take somewhat of a pay cut if i dont stay in my field but i cant make less the $400 wk/$10 hr

Shoot go for Home Depot, they were willing to pay me $11 an hour for part time because i worked retail before. Although I hear they also been hit by the construction slowdown.

If not the Green Machine always looking for The Few, The Proud, The National Guard!

Every Day in the Guard is like a day on the Farm!
Every meal a banquet!
Every paycheck a fortune!
Every formation a parade!

OOOHHH....How I love the military!!!!!

I would try to look at staffing agencies. Places like manpower or something similar might be able to help you, even if its with a temp job.

Hey isn't cubano homeless! "Occupation: homeless"

Hey, you should start a business making custom screens for aquariums. The ones with clear mesh that dont block out the light but still keep the fish from jumping.

I would definatley buy a couple. We have lost hundreds of dollars in fish, mostly fairy wrasses.

Someone here on RC was making them but he wasnt local.

You build them the same way build screens for windows but with the clear mesh material.

Hope thi shelps,

JOHNNY

Great idea. There is a clear mesh? Never seen that.

that reminds me lol i built my canopy out of the metal i would normally build a screen enclosure with and then covered the top, front, and sides in wood but left the back open to let it vent... i screened the back to keep the fish from jumping lmao i paid under $20 for my canopy :p it started out as a tmeporary fix (kind of a joke) but ended up not looking half bad

sorry about the layoff dude, i just had 2 ppl laid off my team at work this week and it seems to be a growing trend in s fl. I'd say to check out the agencies, they can get u a job fast. Do you know how to do vertical blinds? I got a condo that needs some
