Office Tank on a Whim - 3gal Picotope

I don't see no palm trees!

Instead of a fish have you thought about doing an invert only tank? Lots of hermit crabs would be interesting and quite lively.
I definitely need fish to appease the masses, they wouldn't hear of an invert tank :) If I had a Nemo and Dori, then everyone would be happy, but that's obviously not going to happen.

I've wanted to do this in my cube for a while! I don't think my facilities manager will allow it so I'll jsut have to live vicariously through yours. keep up the nice work and I'm in for zoas :)
I doubt I am allowed to have one either, but I smuggled it in and haven't had anyone yell at me for 2-mo so it may be worth a shot for you :) Thanks for tagging along!

that thing is gonna be sweet when you stock it up
Thanks, I hope so!

lol my cube is open to a major traffic hallway and only 3 walls so I couldn't hide it in any way :headwalls:

As I mentioned I may do earlier this week, I headed to the LFS at lunch and picked up a couple of short term fish.

Since I had bad luck months ago when I started the tank, I decided to go with a couple cheap and relatively bullet proof damsels for a bit to see what happens. I got a 4 stripe and a yellowtail. No aggression yet, and all seems to be well for now. Though the 4 stripe did manage to jump into my overflow already (and I found a hermit in there!).

Plan to ride these two out for a bit until I see aggression or they get too big.

Quick update:

Fishies look good and are getting along. I have been fragging out small chunks of stuff from my 28g and bringing them in also. Hope to procure a few types of zoas (eagle eye, radioactive dragon eye, and tubs blue) over the weekend to bring in next Monday.

I think the xenia just needed some fish poop, it is starting to look better since I added some bioload to the tank.

Some orange zoas that have settled in nicely:

And some GSP which hasn't quite settled in just yet, plan is for it to encrust the back wall:

And finally a FTS with "Convict" and "ATE" swimming around:

Notice the cool overflow box and lid from Steve at Bonsai Reefs. The overflow box definitely keeps the water surface cleaner in conjunction with the AC70, and the InTank basket is awesome as they always are.

This is looking nice! Does Steve at Bonsai Reefs have a website? I am interested in those overflow boxes.

Would love one for my desk, I would have to to a 100% sealed tank because of all the computers i work around. did you explore this option at all

I think my tank is about as close as you can get to 100% sealed, it's fully lidded. Buy you need some form of oxygen exchange so any more sealed is really out of the question. I think it's probably a bad idea if you are around sensitive equipment, I've had a couple of small spills that would not have played well with electronics.

what is the number of fish that has been through the tank since its been set up, 4 total? Im suprised the sandbed didn't build up a little from the feeding/waste.

is there a heater in there now?

Had a clown for about 3-days that was added a week after tank startup. It died of what looked like brook so the tank sat unoccupied for a couple of months and the damsels have only been in there for a couple weeks. There are also 5 tiny hitch hiker hermits. No heater, office temp stays constant 24/7-365 because it's a production cleanroom facility and the water stays at 76.

thats cool, office temp fluxes are the worst but your niche is lucky if its straight 76 thats rare beyond belief. we can barely agree on a radio station much less const 76 someone would be whining for the ac.

Oh I'd be ****ed if the office temp was 76!! Way too hot for me! It stays a constant 72 in the office but the tank, with AC70, lid, etc runs at a constant 76.

how bout an update? Hows everything looking?

Everything is looking good still. Both fish are alive, all the corals are still alive and growing. I left the tank mostly in the care of co-workers while I was out for 2-wks for the holidays though, so the neglect during that time did take a partial toll on the tank.

I still came in for weekly water changes, but it looks like there was some gross overfeeding evidenced by the pellets found on my desk and the cyano outbreak in the tank. Did an extra water change earlier this week and still need to change out the GFO again, and hope to get everything back in control.

I'll snag some pics once it's looking a little better. Once it's under control I plan to add some radioactive dragon eye zoas, eagle eye zoas, and packer bay zoas. Then I'll probably look into a shrimp of some sort.

Thanks for checking in!! :bounce3:

I haven't really put any effort into this tank besides basic maintenance up until yesterday. My ghetto rigged "taped on" LED mount was falling apart which prompted me to put together a proper solution.

I headed to my local hobby shop in search of carbon fiber stock, but unfortunately they didn't have what I was looking for so I decided to try rigging something up out of wood. I rigged up this little test fixture last night, and before putting too much effort into making it look pretty decided to do a test fit. Fit is great, so will be taking it home again tonight to seal, paint, glue, and tweak it just a bit. The extra height is because the LED's are bleaching everything in the tank, I am hoping the extra 4" or so will help out, though light bleed has increased substantially! If it wasn't bad enough before, my office definitely now looks radioactive even from across the building.

May still try to rig something out of carbon fiber if I can find the right stock, that'll look a lot cooler... :)

No updates on livestock, still just the two damsels, xenia, GSP, and orange zoas. Need to start adding some more corals!

Oh I forgot to mention, I had another "whim" today in regards to this tank... Instead of my original softie plan, I'm going to mix in some nice LPS. I've been wanting some sweet acan, scoly, and fungia for a while for the nano, but since its now overrun with SPS and out of room they are going in the pico! :)

So the stand looks much better painted black in waterproof (and fuelproof! :)) paint.

I also stopped by the LFS on the way home tonight and picked up a wagon wheel fungia, green bay packers zoas, and eagle eye zoas. Also threw in a few snails for a CUC. It took 100% of my willpower to NOT buy an insane warpaint scoly and some sweet acans also!! I figure it's best to "test dummy" LPS with the cheapest piece of the bunch... :) Here they are waiting in the big tank until tomorrow:

Looking forward to finally getting this thing into proper shape!!

Do they have you a reserved parking place yet? :lmao:

An idea about your light bleed, how about a small canopy like structure made from aluminum or sheet metal as a deflector. Know someone with a metal brake?

I've got a reserved spot at two different places, LOL!!! jk...

I thought about a canopy, but the light bleed is mostly from reflection off the plexiglass top that I am using to control evap and keep the tank somewhat contained. So without building a full-blown hood, I don't think it would add much value.
