I bought a borb last week..it made it 30 hrs before perishing. the LFS had him for a while so I was perplexed. Come to find out they were running very, very low salinity. The best explanation I have is that the nearly 2 hr drip acclimation wasn't enough for him to make the transition to 1.025. I will never understand why even these "good" LFS stores operate the way they do. If it's cost that drives this behavior then just double the price on all fish, run the system appropriately, and give me a mediocre guarantee. Looks like the LFS will be losing my frequent business. Any good recommendations for an online borb supplier?

That totally sucks... it hurts even more on such an expensive fish!
FWIW next time (if there is a next time)
I got my Borb home (I was told by the dude at the LFS the salinity was 1.020) so I matched a 10G QT to 1.020 and I am letting evaporation bring up the salinity. Should take a few days... great way to get him eating too although that wasn't an issue for this fat bastid!

Quick question. I have two right now. I believe they have paired but not 100% sure. They've been in my display for about 3 months. They hang out together sometimes but other times they are separate. There is no chasing. Question is my LFS has had a tiny one for the last three weeks. I've debated about adding it to my pair. What's your thoughts of doing so?

Love these guys though.

That's a good idea! I think mine came from 1.011!!!

I really do want another. I would get a sunburst but it's seems they can just hide out sometimes.

Hate to spend the $$$. What are you guys paying for these?

Ya, I find most LFS run low salinity so I just match my QT water to whatever it came in with and let evap bring it up slowly. I have rad that "acclimatizing" fish more that 30 minutes is a very bad idea because of ammonia poisoning so I don't acclimatize at all. I use DT water and RODI to match.

I'm in Canada. Usually $150-200 is the going rate. My guy was $200.... so that's like what $40 USD lol.... He's huge and fat, almost as big as my Powder Brown Tang.

Just joined the club last month- have 3 - this is me bubbles the biggest and leader

Awesome! I can't wait to get mine into some real light. (I do have lots of shelf rock for him to hide under until he gets used to it... being a deepwater fish and all) He's only got ambient light right now and is pretty pale. Your guy is super rich! Nice!

Well FML!
I woke up to a dead Borb this morning... I have no idea what happened. I have 2 ammonia alert badges... Salinity was 1.025.... 78 degrees.... 10 Gallon Qt with AC50 filled with seeded Saporix. An air stone driven seeded sponge. 5G water change 48 hours ago....

I have such terrible luck with fish OR I am extremely incompetent despite great efforts...

It wold not eat yesterday... I was a little worried but not too worried....

I wish I could do an autopsy and find out what happened...

Man, sorry to hear that! This sucks! I have bad luck with fish too...the more I get to know other people, i fins they also have bad luck. Most don't want to admit it out of pride or embarrassment. I'm at the point of settling for a tank full of clowns and blue damsels!!! I found another borb at a LFS that's been there for 3 weeks but they have a questionable reputation and no warranty!!! Liveaquaria wants $300!

Hello fellow reefers. I was able to purchase two beautiful Borbonius Anthias from a lfs in Fremont, CA. Both measure up to atleast 2 inches. All photos were taken at the lfs with my camera phone.

Before I purchased them, I made sure that both were eating well. The lfs fed them Mysis and sure enough, there was a feeding frenzy in each tank. When I took both of them home, I separated them into different breeder boxes I purchased from PetSmart. I fed them Mysis and a little NLS pellets. The Mysis they quickly attacked, but the pellets, they left alone. I hope to train them to eat pellets in the next few weeks, before I release them in the display tank.

With both of them displaying different coloration, does anybody know how to get the pink color in the body to show more as compared to the beige coloration?

Below is the 1st one that caught my eye. I fell in love with the deep pink coloration and golden blotches.

Here is the 2nd one that I purchased. This one's body coloration is a combination of beige and pink with dark brown blotches.

Even with the "brown" coloration, yours are some of the nicest I've seen. Absolutely beautiful.

I have a borb about 3" now. eats everything. beautiful fish. i want to add another but afraid
ill take some pics

Here's my borb from nyaquatic. My favorite fish in the tank. Have had him for 1.5 months and going strong. Initially he would only eat frozen rods but within a week he started eating spectrum pellets, now he is the first fish to go to the food dispenser every time.

I've had this guy for 3 months. Two days ago he swims in the nearest crevice and only ventures out for a brief flash then goes back in. No tank aggression although the bristle tooth can be a douche. He looks fine kinda fat and was always front and center. I'm worried.

Bought my Blotched Anthias from Divers Den on September 7, 2016. He or She has been in my Reefer 450, eats very well Mysis, Brine, NLS. He had a bit of cloudy eye and frayed fins in October. I treated with Prazi and he is doing very well. Eyes are clear with that classic Anthias metallic turquoise color, fins grew back. He is about 3 1/2 inches long. I can't figure out how to post pics here...... oh well. The key as others have said is making sure they do not present with swim bladder issues. I keep water at 77 degrees.

Sup RC, I purchased a small blotchy yesterday afternoon from my local LFS. I acclimated him for three hours and then put him into a social box inside the tank to see if any other fish would have aggression. Anyways everything seemed to look good but now the blotchy is in the corner swimming face down. Has anyone else experienced this ? Is this normal ?

Two male Borbonius Anthias fight

Two male Borbonius Anthias fight

Hello guys,

I wanted to give something back to this community so I wanted to share my experience with my newly acquired Borbs. I ordered 4 of them through a LFS and I have rarely seen them come in on the larger side so I was expecting to receive them at the 2" range.

Upon my pickup I was surprised that they are all 3" and larger with the larger specimen at close to 4" I'd say. I have witness them fought and it was a scary scene. When the larger specimens fight, they swim against each other and push against each other with the head facing each other. They would open their big mouth and engulf another's whole mouth and hold on to it for minutes.

They can be very mean and territorial, I had to remove one of the male and QT him on the side. I only had them for a couple of days and I'll check in and report back. Thanks.
