Official: Masterflex Calcium Reactor Setup Thread

Im using an older model Masterflex. Large Blue box. I also have a Blue-White diaphragm pump that seems to be dead on @ 50ml. either I was having the same issues.

Since that reactor takes effluent out of the recirc tubing it will often build up excess gas.

If the loose tubing isn't the problem, drill the lid, and pull your effluent from the lid. This will solve the issue. Just make sure to use the correct drill bits (ones made for plastics).

Pulling through is better than pushing for the single fact that these pumps can overpower the o-rings in case of an effluent clog creating a mess. When pulling through if there is a clog somewhere it just stops pulling through but won't make a mess.

I disabled my recirc and the reactor has run noise free and air buildup free for days.

Apex reactor pH plots don't show much difference before/after, either in duty cycle or pH stability, so I am calling it a win.

For people looking for L/S 24 tubing, I just found a source on eBay who says that he has more and is selling it for $39 for 25 feet (WAY better than the retail price of $120 for 25').

I think the tubing that he has expires this month, but that is probably fine for our purposes I am guessing. I just asked him to double check the expiration date and will report back.

Here is his ebay store:

It's not listed on his Ebay store.

The guy says he has 30 boxes of this (he sent pics of the label and the stack of boxes, but I cant seem to get them to upload):
By MASTERFLEX via Thermo Scientific
Tubing type: Silicone, Platinum - Cured
Size: L/S 24
Length: 25ft
Reorder #: 900-1683
LOT: 0007506529
EXP: 08-JULY-2016

So it is expired, but I think that is ok for our purposes.

He wants $50 shipped ($40 for tubing and $15 for shipping) per box.

Anyhow, Mark do you know will this stuff work? $50 sounds a lot better than $160 if it should work?

Call cole parmer and ask them about the lifespan of that tube. I know it's high quality stuff but lost my chart that specified operating hours for each tubing set. Call them up, they'll help you out!

I got my pump in today!
I was kind of worried about the lower rpm 1.6-100 and was worried it wouldn't put out enough flow boy am I wrong this will work just fine!
Just need my easy load head :)

with 7523-60 using LS24, the lowest setting I could set was 30mL/min, way too much for the current demand. Thinking about getting a tubing with 1/8" ID to slowdown the flow, but having a hard time obtaining an adapter to go from 1/8"ID to 1/4"ID speedfit. can anyone shed some light on it.

I found the source of my excessive air. When I removed the reactor out of frustration, I took it down to clean it up and store it. When I removed the manifold from the top of the lid, I was able to lift the manifold from the top of the pump. The 1" tubing had become hard. It was loose enough to pull air in, but it didn't leak water when ever I would shut it off. Back to it.

Wow so the silicone tubing is only about 200hrs life whereas the pharmed/neoprene gets like 4000+hrs

Sounds like especially for us, silicone is a no go, which is what that guy on eBay had

Pharmed is where it's at. Those ratings are at full speed too. At the speeds we run the tubing should last over 10,000 hours but I recomend changing the tubing 2-4 times a year. Keeps it consistent.

Do you want me to look for a precision head?

The hose takes a beating. I've found the hose that comes with the python water changer holds up really well. The stuff from the box stores wears down quickly in comparison.

So where is the best place to get tubing Masterflex Norprene tubing (A60 G) , L/S 16?

Do we purchase their brand tubing or are their good alternatives that work well?
