OG Zoos?

Reef Bass

colors and textures
I read in a post on here a while back, from Mooch I think, where he pointed out that someone's "newly discovered" polyps had in fact been around for some time.

IMHO, I think all varieties we see have existed in the ocean for decades if not centuries and it's the relative explosion in the popularity of reefing that has collectors searching more and stumbling across "new" varieties ("Hey this one is slightly different from that one. Let's name it and sell it.")

Having not been reefing since the dawn of time, I got me thinking, what are some of the "original" varieties that have been around for say 10 or 20 years?

Green ones, organge ones, blue ones, and the one with patterns on them. :)

In all seriousness from what I have been following on here the name game really did not pickup until the middle 2000s and before that there were really no names. Zoas were sold by the colony not by the frag so it was really just color.

If you put a gun to my head and I had to answer that question it seems that dragon eyes and eagle eyes seem to have been around for the longest. Again, that is my opinion I was not reefing for 10 or 20 years.

I agree, when people ask me what kind of zoas I have, I just name the colors. I don't call any of my zoas by name. Green with orange skirt or pink with green skirt. I have never said my polyps are people eaters!

Makes total sense about descriptions versus names. I had been wondering if eagle and dragon eye morphs had been around the longest, based on the seemingly universal availability of them, but M&N seems to have answered that.

Are you looking for pictures or names? I couldn't give you a name, but 70 % of the pictures in the photo sticky above have been on the market for over 10years. Many will scoff at that and say no way. Why? Cause what you are seeing today with the advent of digital photography, super macro shot with high tech lens, photoshopping and intense 250 to 400 MH with Perfect T5 or LED supplementation, is the exact same polyp that has been around for many many many years. Names and technology makes many of them appear new, yet they are the same polyp from the old days.

Here is a prime example of what you're asking for. I love this guys thread and his tank. Why?

1. He didn't mention a single name and just look at his achievements.

2. Look at the stunning coloration, placement and mature growth.

3. It's a true reef tank.

4. It shows how you can have a stunning tank without the hype.

5. Every single polyp in this tank with the exception of 2, were around 10 to 15 years ago. It's true, I've own most of them myself at one time or another. These are the OG polyps you are looking for, aren't they stunning. No, this is not a slam to the owner of this tank, it's just the oppossite. I applaud him for not fragging it to death with every new polyp that grew.

I wish I could shake his hand.

In my opinion, this is reefing

+1 ken.... Thier are soooooo many zoas overlooked. But the ones thats have made the most headlines have been around since christ was a child. They just wernt pimped out and not built up back then... 04 05 it was still a hobby.

I hate the "Name Game" as well, but it is so incredibly prevelant in the hobby right now...

My question is this, how do we "Bring It Back The Other Way"?

I work at a LFS and constantly battle the names. I try not to use them or encourage their use, and only sell polyps by description, but the truth of the mater is I could probably make 3 times as much by selling "named" and by the polyp.

I miss the days of having a stunning huge colony show up in an order. Anymore, it's all the same drab boring polyps when ordering colonies with out the "My Name Is" tag at insane prices.

All the real nice stuff is being cherry picked away before anyone even has a chance at them and sold at crazy high per polyp prices.

You are right brother... It is truly sad!

So as not to get off Topic here, I'm starting a a seperate post.

I do agree, amazing tank with an incredible collection of polyps!

Actually if memory serves me correctly it started with Tubb's blues. The funny thing was Tubb's didn't name them we all refer to them as Tubb's blues. Not only did Tubb's not name them he was pretty generous with them. Then came Purple people eaters that was the beginning of the end, then fire and ice, eagle eyes and so, on and so on.
